QUEENS, N.Y. - Scoring 674 points, St. John's cross country team finished 26th out of 34 teams at the 2008 NCAA Northeast Regional hosted by Columbia University on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, N.Y.
Freshman Nicole Cocozza was the lead runner for St. John's, clocking in at 23:52.3 for a 113th place finish. The time was a season best for the rookie from Cranston, R.I., who ran the 6K in 24:03 at the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 31. This is the second race this season where Cocozza was the first St. John's runner across the finish line, although she is continually in the front pack of four.
St. John's shaved 214 points off last year's score, where the team finished 33rd with 888 points. BIG EAST-foe Providence won the Regional with 36 points. Syracuse, another conference opponent was the runner-up with 90 points. Both teams received automatic bids to the NCAA Finals in Terra Haute, Ind., on Nov. 24.
Senior Tyneka Greene came in second for the Red Storm with a time of 24:10.0 placing 131st. Freshman Aryon Trujillo, sophomore Sarah Sudbury and freshman Sabine Schneider rounded out the scoring for St. John's. Trujillo clocked in at 24:13.4, finishing four spots behind Greene. Sudbury ran the 6K in 24:24.3, in 153rd place. Schneider was the final scorer for the Red Storm with a 162nd-place time of 24:33.1.
Sophomore Lori Dougherty and junior Sarah Fry also ran in the meet, placing 215th and 232nd, respectively.
St. John's will return to Van Cortlandt Park for one final time this season as the team will compete in the ECAC Championships 5K on Nov. 22.
