QUEENS, N.Y. - Red Storm sophomore Nicole Cocozza led all St. John's runners at the annual 6K BIG EAST Championships held in Kenosha, Wis., and hosted by Marquette University at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. Cocozza finished 101st overall with a time of 24:52.
As a team, St. John's finished in 14th place, the same position as last year, with an average time of 25:09 and totaling 460 points. Villanova, entering the meet as the fourth-ranked squad in the country by the USTFCCCA Poll, came in first place with 30 points.
Cocozza bested her top 6K time this season, a 27:04 at the Iona Meet of Champions (Sept. 19), by more than two minutes. The meet marked the second time this year that Cocozza finished first on the team after coming in tops at the 5K Metropolitan Championships (Oct. 9).
Senior Pamela Petruski continued her strong season by finishing second on the team and 105th overall, clocking in at 25:00. Freshman Stephanie Barnes finished just two places later with a time of 25:10.
Junior Sarah Sudbury and senior Sarah Fry rounded out the Red Storm scoring as they placed 112th and 115th overall. Sudbury finished in 25:16, while Fry put in a time of 25:23.
Sophomore Aryon Trujillo and junior Kayla Regulski clocked in at 26:02 and 26:17 respectively.
The Red Storm will have a week off before traveling to Franklin Park in Boston, Mass., to compete in the 6K NCAA Northeast Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 14. Last season, St. John's were led Cocozza to a 26th-place finish at the meet.
