QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's junior high jumper Priscilla Frederick finished in eighth place at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships, automatically earning NCAA All-American status. This year's meet was held at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center.
Frederick, who finished 14th at last year's Championships, cleared 1.78 meters (5 feet 10 inches) on her first attempt, tying her with Alabama's Krystle Schade. The Sicklerville, N.J. native, nearly cleared the bar on her final attempt at 1.81 meters but a slight touch knocked it off at the end.
"We are so pleased to have Priscilla finish in the top eight and score for us in the high jump," said head coach Jim Hurt. "Priscilla is a kind of a dream athlete. She has so much talent, and she has the focus and determination to perform at the highest levels of competition. Today's result certainly showcased that."
With her eighth place finish, Frederick becomes just the sixth NCAA All-American in the history of the St. John's women's track & field program, and the first since 2001 when Michelle Hickman finished eighth in the triple jump.
Frederick placed ahead of reigning BIG EAST Champion Carin Knight from UConn and was the only member of the conference in the Top 10 finishers. Frederick won the high jump at last week's ECAC Championships and currently holds the school record with a height of 1.82 meters that she set back in February at the New Balance Invitational.
Frederick and the rest of her Red Storm teammates will kick off the 2010 outdoor season when they travel to Tampa, Fla. for the USF Invitational on March 19.
