St. John's Drops 6-1 Decision To Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis squad fought to a third set in two singles matches but could not fight the deficit as Columbia earned the match, 6-1. Sophomore Milo Hauk won his fifth-straight match against the Lions for an 8-5 record on the season.
The Red Storm moves to 5-9 with the loss to the Lions (11-3), who won their seventh-consecutive match.
St. John's was unable to make a dent in the doubles competition, but Hauk and Asaf Honig battled to a tiebreaker at No.1 against Jonathan Wong and Mihai Nichifor, 9-8 (5). Dustin Goldenberg and Martin Kosut came close in the No. 3 match, stumbling 9-7 against Cyril Bucher and Rajeev Deb-Sen.
In singles, Hauk finished first at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Nichifor before the Lions regained the lead with a win at No. 5, 6-2, 6-3 over Kosut. Columbia clinched the match with back-to-back victories at No. 5 and No. 3.
Honig sent his No. 5 matchup to a third set, falling 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (3) to Bucher. Mike Lampa finished the final match at No. 6 after staying alive for a third set against John Yetimoglu, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (8).
The Red Storm travels to Yale on Saturday, Mar. 27 for a 12 p.m. showdown.
