MAHWAH, N.J. - The Red Storm track & field team captured its third straight Metropolitan Championships title Saturday at Ramapo College in New Jersey.
St. John's boasted first place finishes in the seven different events, and top five finishes in another eight events. The team finished with 170 total points, 50 more than second place South Connecticut State.
Junior Rene Cousins registered her first event win of the season as she placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.54. Cousins also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash at 12.47 seconds.
Freshman Rikka Lovely won the 100-meter dash for the second time in the last three meets, running 12.13 seconds. Lovely finished sixth in the 200-meter dash along with freshman Molly Ellis who placed fifth in 25.80.
The Red Storm took first through third place in the 400-meter dash with senior Asia Nettles finishing tops with a time of 58.18 seconds. Junior Lauren Wynter placed second in 58.60 seconds while Ellis was third with a time of 58.65 seconds.
Junior Priscilla Frederick won the high jump with a top jump of 1.60 meters. Frederick also placed fourth in the long jump, jumping 5.34 meters. Freshman Stephanie Barnes was third in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump while senior Fayanne Francis placed ninth (5.05) and junior Bintou Dibba was 14th (4.85) in the long jump.
Sophomore Chanel King captured first place in the shot put with a distance of 12.87 meters. She also finished second in the discus and tenth in the javelin. Courtney Kolinsky finished 12th in both the discus and shot put, while Frederick was fourth in the shot.
Junior Vanessa Thompson captured third place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.64. Senior Pamela Petruski also captured third, running a 2:18.61 in the 800-meter race. Junior Kim Piard finished fourth while freshman Alexis Bean placed 21st.
Senior Sarah Fry placed second in the 10,000-meter race and third in the 1,500-meters, with times of 39:18.22 and 4:55.38 respectively. Fry also finished fifth in the 5,000-meters with a time of 19:33.82.
Lori Dougherty finished fifth in the 10K, while Sarah Sudbury was tenth in the 1,500-meters and Katrina Schaefer finished 22nd. Kayla Regulski ran a 20:14.44 in the 5K, good for the seventh place.
The Red Storm garnered first place honors in both the 4x100- and 4x800-meter relays.
St. John's will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. on Thursday for the prestigious Penn Relays.
