St. John's Finishes Second At Outdoor Metropolitan Championships

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The St. John's track & field team battled the rain, wind and cold to take home second place in the Outdoor Metropolitan Championships on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., this weekend.
St. John's captured first place in five different events while 17 different athletes scored points by finishing in the top eight of their event.
Junior Samantha Meyerhoff produced the stand-out performance of the meet, setting a new school record with a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:15.80. Freshman Angela Jarvela took second place in the event with a time of 11:44.00.
Freshman Chelsea Trant placed first in the 10K race with a season-best time of 36:36. That time currently ranks sixth in the BIG EAST.
Senior Rene Cousins led the Red Storm in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line with a career-best time of 12.16 seconds. Freshman Corrine Williams placed fourth with a time of 12.41 and sophomore Rikka Lovely scored points with a sixth-place finish at 12.45 seconds.
Sophomore Molly Ellis placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.11, while senior Lauren Wynter came in ninth at 1:01.11.
Senior Sarah Sudbury took second place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.55. Classmate Kim Piard scored one point with an eighth-place finish (2:23.42). Sophomore Alexis Bean came in 11th place (2:24.99).
Junior Nicole Cocozza finished fourth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:53.89, and redshirt-sophomore Aryon Trujillo ran a career-best time of 18:26.4 in the 5K to finish ninth.
Freshman Shayna Presley took points in the 400-meter hurdles with an eighth-place finish (1:07.35), while Williams took second place in the 200-meter dash (22.27), followed by classmate Maya Lewis (22.45) and Lovely (22.90). None of the 200-meter times will count for the Championship season as the race was run from the start of the 400-meter lines.
In the field events, senior Bintou Dibba came in second in the long jump with a season-best leap of 5.58 meters. Sophomore Stephanie Barnes came in ninth with a top of jump of 5.00 meters. Sophomore Adara Simonelli placed third in the javelin throw with a distance of 39.22 meters.
Junior Chanel King continued her strong performances in the throwing events, including a second-place finish in the shot put (13.46 meters). King also placed fifth in the discus (32.76 meters) and sixth in the hammer throw (45.69 meters). Freshman Natasha Amazan scored points in the shot put (11.96 meters) and discus (29.34 meters), while classmate Angela Onye placed seventh in the discus throw (31.64 meters).
St. John's stuck it out through the drastic weather conditions to perform well in the relay events at the end of the meet. St. John's took first place in the 4x400-meter (4:02.13) and the 4x800-meter relays (9:43.62). The Red Storm finished third in the distance medley relay (13:21.04) and fifth in the 4x100-meter relay.
Last season, St. John's won the Metropolitan Championships with 170 points.
St. John's will not compete again until the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 28 at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa.
