St. John's Track & Field Celebrated At Monday Meeting

The annual Monday Meeting held at DaSilva Memorial Track gave St. John's track & field an opportunity to display the team's talent on its home track and honor the commitment of the program's seniors.
Nicole Cocozza, Chanel King, Samantha Meyerhoff and Aryon Trujillo were all recognized during a break in the meet as head coach Jim Hurt presented them with flowers and an action photograph.
King led off the night with an individual title in the shot put throwing 14.76 meters. St. John's took the other top spots with Natasha Amazan placing second at 13.48 meters and Gina Frisa following at 10.72 meters.
The other three seniors excelled in the distance races as Cocozza took first place in the 800-meters with a time of 2:24.05. Michelle Duffy, their junior running mate, was second at 2:26.31. Trujillo and Meyerhoff were third and fourth with times of 2:29.07 and 2:30.74. Chelsea Trant ran a 2:36.23 and Marisela Acevedo crossed the line at 2:57.84.
In the 1500-meters, Duffy took first place at 4:54.40 with Trujillo placing second after leading much of the race at 4:58.67. Meyerhoff was third at 5:01.14 and Trant came in fifth at 5:07.44. Acevedo ran a time of 6:08.74.
Normally excelling in the high jump, Priscilla Frederick shined in the 100-meter dash as she came from behind the pack to take first with a time of 12.42 seconds. Trudy-Ann McLean placed second at 12.48 seconds. LaTasha Collins finished fifth at 13.17 seconds. The combination of Frederick, Maya Lewis, Claire Mooney and Corrine Williams won going away in the 4x100 with a time of 48.77 that was a good six seconds ahead of the competition.
Shayna Presley had a strong performance in the 400-meter hurdles with a winning time of 1:07.19. Teammate Brittany Petersen was fourth with a time of 1:21.17. With the hurdles off the track, Nastasya Rodriques and Rikka Lovely took second and third in the 400-meter dash with finishes of 59.32 and 59.76 seconds. Williams placed seventh at 1:05.49.
The long jump featured a fitting finish for St. John's as Stepanie Barnes and Radiya Buchanan finished tied for first with a 4.90 meter mark.
St. John's track & field is back in action this weekend at the Metropolitan Championships as the Red Storm look to do one better than last year's second place finish.
