Piscataway, N.J. -
St. John's track & field battled for first until the final relay and concluded a strong weekend of performances with a second place finish at the Metropolitan Championships for the second consecutive year.
"We posted numerous personal and season bests as well as BIG EAST and ECAC Championship qualifying marks," said head coach Jim Hurt. Senior Chanel King added two more Metropolitan Championships to her resume as she took the shot put and discus events, while narrowly missing the hammer throw title.
King now has eight career individual titles at the Metropolitan Championships. King put up ECAC-qualifying marks with 13.72 meters in the shot put and 52.50 meters in the hammer throw. Her winning throw of 41.33 meters in the discus was almost a full three meters ahead of the rest of the competition.
St. John's took the top four spots in the shot put with Natasha Amazan, LaTreace Johnson and Danette Hinton all trailing King. Amazan threw 13.10 meters, Johnson 12.82 meters and Hinton 12.23 meters. Gina Frisa finished at 10.11 meters. Johnson took sixth in the discus with a mark of 35.26 meters. Hinton threw 32.50 meters and Frisa recorded a 30.42 meter throw in the discus. Claire Mooney, Frederick, Trudy-Ann McLean and Shayna Presley earned an ECAC-qualifying time with a 3:46.91 first place finish in the 4x400. Rikka Lovely, Corrine Williams, Maya Lewis and Frederick were just short of beating Rutgers in the 4x100 but still qualified for ECACs with a 46.29 second finish.
