CHICAGO - One of two undefeated teams left in the NCAA, No. 13/11 DePaul had its league-leading offense firing on all cylinders Friday afternoon, as the Blue Demons downed St. John' s 3-0.
With the win, the Blue Demons (15-0-3, 7-0-2) claimed their first-ever BIG EAST Regular-Season title. St. John's (10-7-1, 6-2-1) can still secure a bye to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament should Seton Hall top or tie Georgetown this evening. That game kicks off a 7 p.m. in South Orange, N.J. If the Hoyas prevail, the Red Storm will host an opening-round game on Tuesday at Belson Stadium.
The loss was the first for St. John's on the road during BIG EAST play.
The Blue Demons struck first in the tenth minute, as Rachel Pittman sent a ball into the box that found Abby Reed, who headed it above Diana Poulin to put DePaul up 1-0. The goal marked the 11th of the season for Reed, who leads the BIG EAST in scoring.
17 minutes later, freshman phenom Alexa Ben found the back of the net, putting the Blue Demons up 2-0. The tally was her ninth of the season.
Early in the second half, the Red Storm experienced some peculiar weather that made its way off Lake Michigan just over a mile to the Lincoln Park neighborhood where DePaul is located. In the middle of a driving wintry mix, the game was halted 30 minutes due to a nearby lightning strike. The weather proved to be an issue for both squads all afternoon. At kickoff, the temperature was 39 degrees with a soaking sleet and wind gusts that reached 45 miles per hour.
Just over ten minutes after the delay ended, the Blue Demons scored their last goal of the game, as Reed chipped in her 12th of the season, giving DePaul the 3-0 advantage.
Poulin made four stops for the Red Storm in the loss.
For the match, DePaul outshot the Johnnies 11-5. Seven of DePaul's 11 tries were on target.
