QUEENS, N.Y. - After leading one of the nation's best defenses this season, Anna Maria Baldursdottir and Diana Poulin have been honored as All-Region selections by the NSCAA. Baldursdottir was named NSCAA First Team All-Northeast Region, while Poulin earned a spot on the NSCAA All-Northeast Region Second Team.
Baldursdottir, a 2016 All-BIG EAST First Team honoree, anchored a St. John's defense that compiled the conference's least amount of goals against. The Red Storm allowed just 12 goals in 20 games, good enough for a .565 team goals-against average that ranked 13th in the country. The Gardabaer, Iceland native, known for her defensive prowess, also chipped in offensively. The sophomore tallied three goals and one assist for seven points. All three of her goals were game-winners, ranking fifth in the BIG EAST in that category.
Poulin, a three-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, earns her second NSCAA All-Region honor after being a first team selection last season. Earlier this month, Poulin became just the second player in BIG EAST history to win the conference's Goalkeeper of the Year Award three times. The Hauppauge, N.Y., native set the St. John's career record for wins in the team's 1-0 win over CCSU earlier this season and set the single-season program record for clean sheets with 12. The senior was one of the best goalkeepers in the country all season, finishing the campaign ranked 14th in Division I with a .522 goals-against average. Additionally, Poulin's .867 save percentage ranked 15th in the nation and her 12 shutouts ranked seventh.
This season, the Red Storm finished with an overall record of 11-4-5 including a 5-2-2 mark in BIG EAST play. The Johnnies rattled off five straight wins to close out the regular season and earned the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Championship. After defeating Providence in a first-round matchup, St. John's fell to Marquette, 2-1, in overtime in the semifinals.
