Indoor Golf Facility Upgrade Opportunities
QUEENS, N.Y. -- St. John's unveiled its indoor golf training center Wednesday evening with a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the state-of-the-art facility. Located on the lower level of Carnesecca Arena, the new home to the St. John's men's and women's golf programs has many features, including innovative training aides for Red Storm student-athletes.
The facility features a custom putting green, indoor driving range and a swing video analysis center powered by V1 Swing Analysis and SAM PuttLab technology. Important upgrade opportunities remain available for those interested in taking a leadership role in enhancing the St. John's indoor golf training facility.
"To have an indoor facility that we can use year-round is next level for our program," said head women's golf coach Ambry Bishop. "I'm really happy for our program, but more importantly I am happy for our student-athletes as they now have somewhere on campus that they can call home and use as their own."
Campus Minister for Athletics, Fr. Richard Rock began the event with a blessing of the new facility. Interim Athletics Director and General Counsel Joseph Oliva, Esq. then addressed a crowded room filled with alumni, supporters and administrators that helped the room come to fruition.
"We think we've done something special here in creating a dedicated space for our men's and women's golf teams," said Oliva.
Following Oliva's speech, Bishop and head men's golf coach Mal Galletta `91 thanked everyone who had a hand in creating the room and commented on the benefits of having a top-notch indoor golf center.
"The hard work and effort to make sure we got this room up and running for our student-athletes this semester was a huge project for everyone involved," Bishop added. "I sincerely thank you [all]. Our teams are very appreciative."
"This facility will benefit our programs tremendously, not only with the current student-athletes, but also in recruiting," Galletta said. "Being able to show this to potential student-athletes will definitely help sell the St. John's golf program."
Both coaches discussed the design of the facility, which was developed by Tim Cutshall who is well-known in the industry for designing indoor golf centers for a number of universities and golf houses around the country.
"To get one of the most-highly regarded, experienced professionals in the industry to build our facility at St. John's is a big deal for us," said Galletta.
Representatives from the men's and women's programs, freshman Seung Yub Baek and senior Anna Kim, provided live demonstrations of the equipment and technology.
St. John's indoor golf facility is equipped with four hitting stations, three cameras used for video analysis and areas for chipping and putting with training aides such as the SAM Puttlab. The SAM Puttlab uses sports motion analysis and digital media technology to give golfers precise feedback on distance and spin of shots.
The ribbon cutting capped off the event as the men's and women's golf program's formally opened the doors to the brand-new indoor training center.
