St. John’s Finishes Fourth at Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championship

Austin Briggs turned in a two-round 145 to finish in a tie for third
The St. John's men's golf team wrapped up their fall slate on Monday, turning in a two-round 603 to finish fourth overall at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championship in West Orange, N.J.
Hailing from San Clemente, Calif., Austin Briggs paced the field for St. John's, turning in a 70-75 for a combined score of 145. The senior's two-round effort earned him a third-place finish, for his best showing of the 2018 campaign.
"Austin [Briggs] has had some strong rounds this fall," said St. John's men's golf coach Mal Galletta. "He was finally able to string a few together and finish the fall season on a high note."
Gerald Mackedon closed out play inside the top-20 for the fourth time this season, firing a final-round 76. Over 36 holes, the junior rattled off four birdies to shoot a 151.
Senior Matthew Sweeney had a solid finish to the fall campaign, recording a two-round 154 to sit in the top half of the standings.
Senior Ross Moore and rookie Tyler Gerbavsits rounded out scoring for the five-man lineup, turning in a 156 and 157, respectively.
Competing as individuals in the 36-hole event, freshman Jack Simon registered a 151, earning himself a spot inside the top-20. Senior Andrew Baek sat one shot back of Simon, turning in a two-round 152. Senior Jonathan Spicci closed out play with a 155.
St. Peter's University maintained its spot at the top of the leaderboard, carding a combined 583 (+23). Villanova's Connor Daly earned medalist honors with a pair of 71s for a combined score of two-over 142.
As the cold fronts begin to move in, the St. John's men's golf team polishes off its fall schedule for 2018 and will take the next few months to prepare for its upcoming spring tournaments.
