The Johnnies finish in a tie for fourth place
Gerald Mackedon claimed his first title of the 2018 campaign at the Patriot Intercollegiate this weekend after firing a two-round 4-under 138 at Laurel Hill Golf Club.
Turning in a 580, the Red Storm finished in a tie for fourth at the Patriot Intercollegiate, which was shortened to two rounds due to inclement weather and unplayable conditions on Sunday.
Coming off of a second place finish at The Doc Gimmler, Mackedon continued his stellar effort turning in a first-round 3-under 68. During the opening round on Saturday, the Port Jefferson native, fired four birdies over the front nine to make the turn at 2-under par before draining a pair of birdies on the back nine to close out round one. The local product recorded four more birdies over the final 18 to finish at 1-under par and claim his spot atop the leaderboard.
"It's a fantastic start to the season for Gerry [Mackedon]," St. John's Men's Golf Head Coach Mal Galletta said. "He came into the first day of practice excited for the season and the results through the first two events have showed. Even though Gerry was in the lead after the second round, he really wanted to play the third round. Not only because of his confidence to still win the title, but he wanted the team to be able to come back and rally for a better finishing position. It really shows his commitment to the team, more than individual accolades."
Freshman Jack Simon gave a solid effort for the Johnnies as he finished inside the top-20 after carding a 74 followed by a 71 to turn in a two-round total of 145.
Senior Ross Moore had a strong showing on the back nine of his opening round, draining a pair of birdies on the par-3 14th and the par-5 18th holes. Moore finished the two-round tournament with scores of 72 and 75. During round one, senior Austin Briggs drained three-straight birdies over the first 18 holes to turn in a pair 75s at the Patriot Intercollegiate.
Freshman Tyler Gerbavsits saw improvement over the first two rounds, turning in a 79-75. Andrew Baek who played as an individual over the weekend, turned in scores of 85-77.
Tournament host George Mason finished first at the Patriot Intercollegiate with a two-round score of 572.
The Johnnies will return to action on Sept. 28 when the team makes a trip to Malvern, Pa., for the Wildcat Fall Invitational hosted by BIG EAST foe Villanova.
