St. John’s returns to The Armory for final tune-up before the Met Championships
NEW YORK (Jan. 24, 2019) – The St. John's track & field team returns to the New Balance Track and Field Armory for the second annual Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge beginning on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
This weekend's meet will showcase some of the top programs in the NCAA including Penn, Columbia, Temple, Oklahoma, Columbia and UCLA, who finished second at last year's meet.
Senior weight thrower Jennifer Odoemene is coming off a strong performance at the Penn 8-Team Select finishing third with a throw of 17.15 meters. The West Orange, N.J. native has placed inside the top five of seven-straight weight throwing events since her 16th-place finish at Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge last season.
At the 2018 meet, former St. John's weight thrower Nyla Woods nearly broke the weight throwing program record of 19.86 meters set by Sheba George in 2002 by throwing a career-best distance of 19.83 meters for third place.
Also looking to improve her standing from a year ago is sophomore sprinter Leah Anderson. Much like Odoemene, Anderson has finished third or better eight-straight individual races (200 and 400-meter combined) since her 14th-place finish in the 400-meter at last year's Dr. Sandler Invitational Columbia Challenge. Two of those eight finishes came at last weekend's Penn 8-Team Select, where she finished second in both the 200 and 400-meter races with times of 24.66 and 55.93, respectively. Those finishes earned Anderson BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week honors for the second time in her career.
Among the participants for the Johnnies this weekend is shot putter Amarys Berry. The junior tossed a career best and ECAC qualifying distance of 14.11 meters last weekend.
This weekend's meet honors The Armory's late founder and CEO Dr. Norbert Sander Jr., who restored facility in 2000. The entire three-day event can be followed by clicking here.
