St. John’s Picks Up First Win of the Season over Boston College, 5-2

Coach Pottish’s squad earns a resilient first win of the season in a match that lasted over three hours.
FLUSHING, N.Y. – After losing to Brown in the season opener last Saturday, the St. John's Men's Tennis team responded with dominant victory over Boston College Friday night, 5-2, at the USTA National Tennis Center in a match that lasted over three hours.
"I'm extremely proud of my guys for getting this win over Boston College," said head coach Dillon Pottish. "Every guy fought till the end and I have to give [Boston College] credit for battling us until 12:45 AM," added Pottish.
In doubles play, the Johnnies and the Eagles split the first two matches to force a decisive third match to earn the first point of the night. Charlie James and Alex Roszkowski won in the No. 3 position over Boston College's Conor Mullins and Peter Tutecky, 6-2.
After Andrei Crapcenco and Daniel Skripnik lost to Chris Grassel and Max Palmer, 6-3, in the No. 2 match, It came down to Alan Nunez Aguilera and Aditya Vashistha in the No. 1 match. In a hard-fought match, the Johnnies fell just short of a doubles point, losing to Boston College's Derek Austin and Sean Mullins, 5-7.
Despite losing out on the doubles point, the Red Storm cranked it up a notch and played impressive tennis to win five of the six singles matches from the two through six seeds to claim the win.
The Johnnies would take three of the singles matches in straight sets, as Crapcenco, Nunez Aguilera, and Dusan Vukicevic earned impressive wins for the Red Storm.
It would come down to two three-set thrillers to decide a winner as the contest headed early into Saturday morning.
In the No. 4 match, Vashistha would take the final two sets after dropping a close first set to Max Mendelsohn, (4-6, 7-5, 6-1), and give St. John's a 4-2 lead.
Daniel Skripnik clinched the 5-2 victory for the Red Storm as he battled back from dropping the first set to win his match (2-6, 7-6, 6-4).
"We're looking forward to building on this and the quick turnaround to Marist on Sunday," stated Coach Pottish after winning his first-ever spring match as head coach of the Johnnies.
St. John's will battle Marist on Sunday at Cunningham Park at 1 p.m. with a chance to win back-to-back home matches to end the first week of the season.
