St. John’s looks to improve to 6-3 with the Knights looming on Wednesday.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday night in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., to host Fairleigh Dickinson at the USTA National Tennis Center at 8:30 p.m.
After Dillon Pottish's squad started last weekend's road trip with a tough loss to Middle Tennessee, the Johnnies completed the trip to Tennessee with a dominant 5-2 victory over Lipscomb on Saturday.
In doubles action, the Red Storm and the Bisons traded wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. After Luka Sucevic and Andrei Crapcenco dropped their match, 6-4, in the No. 1 match, Aditya Vashistha and Ognjen Trejgut forced a decisive third match for the doubles point, winning the No. 3 match, 6-3.
The duo of Alan Nunez Aguilera and Charlie James battled valiantly in their match but came up just short of gaining the doubles point for the Johnnies, falling 7-5.
Charlie James, Ognjen Trejgut, and Igor Maslov secured their first singles wins of the season from flights 4-6, to guarantee the 7-0 sweep for the Red Storm.
In single's play, the Red Storm earned its first point of the match with a quick (6-1, 6-1) triumph in the No. 4 match by Vashistha over Lipscomb's Pedro Uribe.
Senior Dusan Vukicevic's win increased the Red Storm's lead to 3-1 with a win in the No. 5 position, (6-3, 6-3), over Jake Penny. Vukicevic was the only player to win both of his singles matches in last weekend's road trip.
Sucevic clinched the match for St. John's as he overcame Jorge Ortegan in the No.3 match in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
Friday's showdown will be the second in as many years between the Red Storm and the Knights. The Johnnies walked away with a commanding, 6-1, win over Fairleigh Dickinson in last year's matchup.
The Knights are led by freshman Mehdi Dhuoib, who is 4-4 this season. The Larchmont, N.Y., native has won two singles and two doubles matches in the No. 1 position over their last four contests.
After Wednesday's matchup with the Knights, St. John's will travel to the Garden State on Sunday, March 3, to battle Princeton at 11 a.m.
