Red Storm begins 10-day West Coast swing on Friday night
The St. John's baseball team will return to the West Coast this weekend, kicking off a 10-day Southern California road swing with a three-game set at the University of San Diego beginning on Friday evening at 9 p.m. ET. After taking on the Toreros, the Johnnies will play a midweek contest at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday before closing out its spring break trip with a three-game series at UC Irvine on March 8.
The Red Storm makes its second California trip of the season on the heels of an abbreviated series at Western Carolina, as heavy and persistent rain limited the Red Storm and the Catamounts to just a Sunday doubleheader in Cullowhee, N.C. The Johnnies took the opener, 5-2, before falling in the second game of the twin bill, 13-4.
Sean Mooney picked up the win in the opener for St. John's, throwing five frames of two-run ball for his 20th career win. Mooney became just the 11th hurler in program history to reach the 20-win plateau, improving his career record to 20-5 in 34 appearances. The junior right hander struck out seven, surrendered five hits and allowed just one walk on the afternoon, earning himself a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Mooney was one of two Johnnies to find himself on the conference's weekly honor roll, as Sean McGeehan exploded onto the scene in his Red Storm debut. The junior college transfer went yard with his first Division I swing, kicking off the top of the third with a solo shot to left field. After walking and scoring another run in the fifth, McGeehan found himself bumped from ninth to fourth in the batting order for game two. The Hamilton, N.J., native responded in kind, blasting a solo bomb to lead off the top of the second before adding another homer, this time of the two-run variety, in the sixth inning. On the day, McGeehan went 4-for-6 with three home runs and four RBIs.
McGeehan is far from the only junior college prospect to play a key role in the Johnnies' lineup so far this season. Mitchell Henshaw, a Brockport, N.Y., native by way of Potomac State College, has started all five games for the Red Storm this year and leads the team in hits and RBI with five and four, respectively. He registered his first Division I home run with a solo shot in the fourth inning of game two against Western Carolina. Three other first-year junior college transfers have started every game on the infield for St. John's this season, as Carson Bartels (3B), Rudy Aguilar (SS) and Brandon Bossard (2B) have heard their names called in the starting lineup every game so far this season.
San Diego enters the weekend with a record of 6-3, having most recently topped San Diego State, 4-2, in a Tuesday midweek contest. The Johnnies will be the second Northeast team to visit Fowler Park this season, as the Toreros kicked off the campaign with a three-game sweep of Wagner.
San Diego is hitting .307 as a team through its first nine games, led by three everyday starters hitting .390 or better. Freshman Caleb Ricketts has been experiencing a stellar start to his collegiate career, batting .421 with seven RBIs in his first seven appearances for the Toreros.
The Toreros have been equally as impressive on the mound this season. Two of their three projected weekend starters, Jake Miller and Josh Hendrickson, sport sub-one ERAs through their first two starts of the campaign. Miller has yet to allow an earned run in 13.0 innings, surrendering just three hits and walking six over that span for a WHIP of 0.69. Hendrickson has given up one run in 11 innings of work for a 0.82 ERA, striking out 11 and handing out just a pair of walks. Chris Murphy, the other San Diego hurler with a pair of starts under his belt, has fanned 18 in 11.1 innings of work.
Friday will mark the first ever meeting between St. John's and the University of San Diego.
