St. John’s to Open 2019 Season against No. 12/12 Rutgers

The Red Storm will look to defeat Rutgers for the first time since 2013 on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team opens up its 2019 campaign at home on Saturday, Feb. 9, with a matchup against former BIG EAST rival No. 12/12 Rutgers at DaSilva Memorial Field. This is the 27th all-time meeting between the two programs is set to start at 1 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Ralph Bednarczyk and Rich Donovan on the call. Updates will be provided throughout the game on Twitter by following the handle @StJohnsLax.
Head Coach Jason Miller enters his 13th season at the helm of the Red Storm and leads a team that features an influx of fresh talent to compliment seven returning starters and 28 returning letter winners overall. The Red Storm finished 2018 ranked in the top half of the BIG EAST conference in a number of statistical categories including assists per game (third), ground balls per game (third), man-up goals (third), caused turnovers (second), and shot percentage (third).
SERIES HISTORY: ST. JOHN'S vs. RUTGERS
St. John's has faced the Scarlet Knights more than any other opponent in school history, as the two squads have met 26 times dating back to 1984. Rutgers holds a 21-5 advantage all-time in the series, including a 12-8 victory in last year's season opener in Piscataway.
A SURVEY OF SEASON OPENERS
Under Miller, the Red Storm is 6-6 in season-openers. The Johnnies are 17-13 all-time in the first game of a campaign, including an 8-6 mark since the program's reinstatement in 2005.
SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
Rutgers is led by seven-year head coach Brian Brecht, who led the Scarlet Knights to a 9-6 record a year ago, including a 2-3 mark Big Ten play. Rutgers was selected to finish fourth in the Big Ten by the league's coaches during the preseason. Entering the year, the Scarlet Knights were ranked 12th in both the Inside Lacrosse and USILA Coaches Poll.
The Scarlet Knights enter Saturday's showdown with a 1-0 mark after opening their season last Saturday with a 14-8 win over Lafayette in Piscataway. Last weekend's victory earned Rutgers two Big Ten player of the week accolades. Connor Harryman (22-of-25 on faceoffs, 14 ground balls) was named Big Ten Co-Specialist of the Week while Kyle Pless (three ground balls, two caused turnovers) was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. Redshirt sophomore and 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Adam Charlambides recorded four goals in Rutgers' season opener after missing the last two seasons due to injury.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
As has been the norm during the Miller ear, the St. John's lacrosse team has to navigate one of the toughest schedules in NCAA Division I and in program history this year.
Four of the top 20 schools in the Inside Lacrosse preseason poll are on the Red Storm's 2019 schedule: No. 8 Denver, No. 12 Rutgers, No. 19/18 Georgetown, and No. 20/RV Michigan.
BIG EAST Conference foes Marquette and Villanova were ranked No. 19 and 20, respectively, in the USILA Coaches Poll.
JOHNNIES TO LOOK OUT FOR
Returning for the Red Storm this season are brothers, Joe and Mike Madsen. Joe was a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2018 after leading the team with 31 goals and recording 40 points. Mike registered 24 points last season, 18 of which were goals, for the Johnnies.
Senior Colin Duffy finished with 20 goals and 27 points in 14 games for the Red Storm last season. Senior attackman Declan Swartwood recorded 18 goals and finished fourth on the team with 24 points. Junior midfielder Matt Oehl finished tied for second on the squad with 15 assists in 2018.
On defense, the Red Storm returns 2018 All-BIG EAST selection Aidan Marron to lead a veteran-laden group that features the likes of Pat Smyth, Luke Roediger, and Tim Kiel.
