St. John’s to Face Quinnipiac and No. 12 Columbia This Weekend

The Red Storm will take on Quinnipiac Saturday before facing off against Columbia on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Men's Tennis team will begin its weekend slate of matches on Saturday night, facing off against Quinnipiac at the National Tennis Center at 8 p.m. before traveling into Manhattan to take on nationally-ranked Columbia on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The Johnnies continued their winning streak the last time they took the court as they swept Siena, 4-0, last Friday. Freshman Charlie James finished 2-0 on the week for St. John's and earned his second-straight singles win of the season in a 6-1, 6-4 straight-set victory against the Saints. He also won his doubles match with Alan Nunez Aguilera, 7-5, this past weekend in St. John's lone match of the week.
Coming into this weekend's series of matches, the Johnnies are led by senior Luka Sucevic (2-2) at the number one spot. Sucevic enters the weekend having won his last two singles matches in sweeps of Marist and Siena. Sophomore Igor Maslov has contributed in a strong manner this season for the Johnnies, since taking over the No. 4 spot in the line-up he is 2-0 and is looking to continue his impressive play this weekend.
Freshman Udayan Bhakar holds a 3-0 record since claiming his first singles match in the third contest of the season against Marist.
St. John's and Quinnipiac met last Feburary and St. John's won in convincing fashion, defeating the Bobcats, 6-1. Sucevic led the way for St. John's by snagging wins in both his single and doubles matches.
Entering this Saturday's contest Quinnipiac is 1-2 on the season after dropping its last match against Yale, 7-0. Columbia is entering the weekend with a 2-0 record after cruising past Dartmouth, 4-1, in its last contest.
Quinnipiac is led by Aleska Martinovic, who has the lone singles win in the first two matches for the Bobcats. Freddie Zaretsky has contributed a doubles win and a singles victory over Rider at the No. 1 position.
The 12th ranked Columbia Lions walked away with a commanding 4-0 sweep the last time the two teams met on February 19th, 2017.
Columbia's Victor Pham leads the Lions with a 4-0 record this season. Pham has won both of his singles matches and both of his doubles matches so far this season.
