St. John’s Returns Home to Host Michigan on Saturday

St. John’s looks to win its third-consecutive game to improve to 3-1 this season.
QUEENS, N.Y. – After picking up its second win of the season at No. 11/13 High Point last weekend, the St. John's lacrosse team returns to DaSilva Memorial Field this Saturday at noon to face Michigan (2-1) for the first time in program history.
Coverage of Saturday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Mike Watts and Nkwa Asonye on the call from Queens.
Two days after completing a come-from-behind 10-9 victory at No. 11/13 High Point, St. John's received votes in the latest editions of both the Inside Lacrosse Media poll and the USILA Coaches Poll (17). Michigan enters Saturday's contest with three votes in the USILA Coaches Poll.
The victory over the Panthers last weekend marked the first win over a ranked opponent on the road since the Johnnies defeated top-ranked Notre Dame, 12-10, on March 30, 2013. Saturday's triumph gave the Johnnies their second ranked win in as many seasons, as the Red Storm took down No. 19/18 Hofstra last spring at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Against High Point, freshman netminder Brody Agres recorded a career-high 12 saves in 60 minutes of action for the Red Storm.
Mike and Joe Madsen paced the way offensively for St. John's (2-1), as the brothers each scored three goals. Mike Madsen also dished an assist on a goal scored by his brother.
Three other members of the Red Storm tallied goals, as Jonathan Huber scored twice, while Declan Swartwood and Chris Buscemi each found the back of the net once.
In total, eight different Johnnies picked up points in the contest, including sophomore faceoff specialist Joseph Fitzpatrick and freshman Matt Duncan, who both earned their first career assists in the win over the Panthers.
Fitzpatrick and Colin Bosak split faceoff duties in the first half. Luke Roediger stepped in at the X in the second half and played a pivotal role in the comeback.
Saturday will mark the fourth contest of the season for the Wolverines and their third road tilt. All three of Michigan's games have been separated by two goals or fewer. The Wolverines are 2-0 in games played away from home. On Feb. 9, Michigan won its seaon opener at Cleveland State, 10-8. The Wolverines are coming off of an 11-10 win on the road against Jacksonville.
Michigan is led by sophomore attackman Alex Buckanavage, who has tallied who has tallied eight goals and seven assists through three games this season. Midfielder Avery Myers and attackman Chris Young have combined to score 11 goals for the Wolverines this season and rank second and third respectively on the team with 12 points. Senior midfielder Brent Noseworthy is tied for the team lead with eight goals.
Kevin Conry was named the second head coach in the history of Michigan's men's lacrosse after the 2017 season. Conry's tenure got off to a successful start in 2018, as the Wolverines went 7-2 in non-conference play. The team also set a program high-water mark with a 5-2 record at home, which included a 5-0 stretch in Ann Arbor.
Michigan ended the 2018 season with an 8-6 overall record. The Wolverines achieved its highest rankings in both national polls last season, checking in as high as No. 15 in the Maverik media poll and 17th in the USILA poll. Michigan also picked up a pair of nationally ranked wins on the road vs. No. 4 Notre Dame on March 21 and No. 14 Penn State in overtime.
After Saturday's contest with the Wolverines, the Red Storm will travel to Loudonville, N.Y., next weekend to battle Siena on March 9, at 1 p.m.
