A six-goal first quarter propels Michigan over the Red Storm.
QUEENS, N.Y. – After winning two-consecutive road contests against Hartford and No. 11/13 High Point, the St. John's lacrosse team lost its second game of the season at home on Saturday to Michigan (3-1), 16-11, on a frigid Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Chris Buscemi and Joe Madsen led the way offensively for St. John's (2-2), as the senior midfielder and junior attackmen each finished with two goals and two assists.
Two other members of the Red Storm finished with multi-goal games, as Jonathan Huber recorded his second hat trick of the season and Declan Swartwood found the back of the net twice.
In total, seven Johnnies logged points on the contest. Senior defenseman Aidan Marron scored from the far side of the field in the contest's closing seconds for his first career goal.
Reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Brody Agres started the game in net for the Red Storm but was replaced by Gavin Catalano midway through the third quarter after surrendering 12 goals. Catalano recorded four saves in his first 24 minutes of action this season.
Joseph Fitzpatrick, Colin Bosak, and senior Luke Roediger split the faceoff duties, as Michigan narrowly topped St. John's at the X, 16-15. Fitzpatrick and Bosak combined to win 14 of the team's 31 faceoff attempts.
St. John's scored the first goal for the fourth-straight game as Buscemi put a shot past Michigan's netminder, Tommy Heidt, 50 seconds into the game.
After surrendering the first goal of the afternoon, Michigan (3-1) recorded six of the game's next seven goals to take a 6-2 lead after one.
Huber scored the first two goals of the second period in less than two minutes to cut into the Michigan lead and bring the Johnnies within two, 6-4. The Johnnies would trade goals with the Wolverines for the remainder of the quarter, finishing the half at 10-7 in favor of Michigan.
Michigan started the second half on fire, scoring three quick goals to give the Wolverines their largest lead of the contest at 13-7. Colin Duffy's unassisted goal with 3:02 left in the third quarter was the Red Storm's only goal of the period.
After Buscemi scored the first goal of the fourth quarter with 13:28 left to play, St. John's proved unable to ignite a comeback. The Wolverines answered back with two goals of their own to increase their lead to 15-9 with 11 minutes left in the game.
The two teams traded goals for the reminder of the game as Aidan Marron scored on a long-distance heave with one second remaining in the game to end the contest at 16-11.
