Mooney, French and Hollowell hold Jayhawks off the board for 10 innings
QUEENS, N.Y.- Wyatt Mascarella scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning to break a scoreless deadlock and propel St. John's to victory in the opening tilt of a three-game series with Kansas on Friday afternoon.
The two teams totaled just seven hits in the pitchers' duel, as three St. John's hurlers combined to blank the Jayhawks over 10 frames of work.
Sean Mooney earned his fourth no-decision in five starts this season after allowing just two hits and two walks over 7.0 innings. The Marmora, N.J., native struck out three and lowered his ERA to just 1.82 on the year. Turner French struck out two in 1.1 frames of one-hit relief before Gavin Hollowell entered and allowed only one of the six batters he faced to reach base on a walk.
Four Johnnies recorded hits on the afternoon, as Brandon Miller, Sean McGeehan, Mike Antico and Rudy Aguilar all logged base knocks for the Red Storm. Miller's poke helped set up the game-winning run in the 10th.
Hollowell came out of the bullpen with one out and two runners on the top of the ninth before recording consecutive outs to exit the inning unscathed.
The Red Storm looked like it might walk off in the home half of the ninth, as Brandon Bossard drew a one-out walk before an Antico single gave St. John's runners on first and second with one out. Next up was Aguilar, who pushed a single through the right side. Bossard rounded third with a full head of steam, but a stellar throw from Blaine Ray in right beat him to the plate and kept the Johnnies off the board.
After a scoreless top of the 10th, St. John's brought home the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning. Mascarella kicked things off with a one-out walk before going first to third on a Miller single to right center. The Jayhawks intentionally walked Ryan Hogan to load the bases for McGeehan, who watched an 0-1 breaking ball miss in the dirt and bounce to the backstop, allowing Mascarella to score and end the game.
The Red Storm and the Jayhawks will play the second game of their series tomorrow afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
