Red Storm will look to secure its fifth-straight win
Fresh off a three-game sweep of Big 12 foe Kansas, the St. John's baseball team will continue its homestand on Tuesday afternoon, welcoming Marist to Jack Kaiser Stadium for a 3 p.m. contest. Live stats and an audio stream of the game can be found on RedStormSports.com.
Winners of four straight and five of their last six, the Johnnies will look to carry that momentum into their midweek matchup with the Red Foxes before closing out a stretch of seven consecutive home tilts with a weekend series against Hofstra. On the team's current four-game tear, the Johnnies have seen significant improvement on both sides of the ball.
After hitting .194 during a 3-9 start that featured an average of just three runs per game, the Red Storm is batting .256 over its last four outings and scoring 5.5 runs per game. The Johnnies' streak has been bookended by a pair of offensive explosions, as the team posted a 7-1 win over Iona on Wednesday before setting season highs with 11 runs and 15 hits on Sunday in the series finale with Kansas.
While the offense has been improving as of late, the Red Storm's pitching has been nothing short of outstanding. Over the last four games, St. John's has surrendered only four earned runs and 18 hits, good enough for a team ERA of 0.97 and an opponent batting average of .150. Kansas, who entered the series with a record of 13-3, was limited to just four runs on the weekend, only three of which were earned, and hit .135. Over the team's last seven games, the Red Storm has not allowed more than three runs in a single contest.
On the heels of its first-ever three-game sweep of a power five program (excluding former BIG EAST members), St. John's swept the conference's weekly awards on Monday. Joe LaSorsa garnered pitcher of the week honors after tossing his first collegiate complete game on Saturday, limiting the Jayhawks to one run on four hits and a pair of walk while striking out a career-high seven batters. He threw 111 pitches on the afternoon, 73 of which were strikes, in a complete game that last just an hour and 55 minutes. Rudy Aguilar was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after becoming just the third St. John's player since 2013 to record five hits in a game, going 5-for-5 with three doubles and four RBIs in the Sunday finale against the Jayhawks. The Ventura College product, who became the first St. John's player to hit three two-baggers in a game since Tim Morris in 2009, also registered a multi-hit outing against Iona on Wednesday.
Marist will play its first action north of the Mason-Dixon Line this season on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Queens with a record of 6-11 following a 2-1 series victory over North Carolina A&T this past weekend.
The Red Foxes have not struggled at the dish so far in 2019, batting. 280 as a team with five players hitting .290 or better. Sophomore infielder Robbie Armitage leads Marist offensively, hitting at a .344 clip. The Marist pitching staff has compiled an ERA of 5.43 in 17 games, allowing opponents to hit .285.
Despite their relatively close proximity to one another, St. John's and Marist have played just two times in program history with both meetings resulting in wins for the Red Storm. The Johnnies won a 16-13 home affair in 1992 before downing the Red Foxes, 5-4, at The Jack in April of 2015.
