St. John’s Welcomes UMass Lowell for Saturday Afternoon Contest

St. John’s looks to win its second-straight game and improve to 4-4 on the year
QUEENS, N.Y. – After winning its first home game this season on Tuesday over Dartmouth, 15-8, the St. John's lacrosse team returns to DaSilva Memorial Field for a Saturday afternoon showdown with the UMass Lowell River Hawks.
Coverage of Saturday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Tim McMaster on the call from Queens.
Saturday's contest will be the second of four-consecutive home games for the Johnnies (3-4), as the Red Storm looks to win its second-straight game and improve to 4-4 on the year.
St. John's win on Tuesday ended a three-game skid and marked the team's first victory at DaSilva Memorial Field since March 24, 2018, when the Johnnies upset No. 19/18 Hofstra, 9-8.
Mike Madsen paced the way offensively for St. John's, as the midfielder/attackman ended the day with two goals and five assists. The Locust Valley, N.Y., native eclipsed his career-high five points that he set earlier this season at Hartford on Feb. 19.
Jonathan Huber and Declan Swartwood each netted four goals in the win over Dartmouth. Swartwood's four-goal afternoon is a new career-high for the senior midfielder. Joe Madsen also finished with a multi-goal game, putting two in the back of the net in the first half.
In total,10 Johnnies tallied points in the contest, including junior midfielder Grant Galligan, who scored his first-career goal in the opening period. Matt Oehl finished with three assists, all occurring in the second half. Ryan Schaefer scored a goal and dished an assist in the third period in St. John's win over the Big Green.
Freshman netminder Brody Agres recorded a career-high19 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Joseph Fitzpatrick and Colin Bosak were efficient as faceoff specialists, as St. John's won 18 of the 26 total faceoffs. Fitzpatrick won 13 of his 18 attempts, while Bosak, finished 5-for-8.
Saturday's showdown with the Johnnies will be the ninth game of the season for the River Hawks, and their fifth game on the road. After starting the 2019 campaign with a 3-2 record, UMass Lowell is coming off three straight losses to UMass, Albany, and Providence. The River Hawks' last win came in their fifth game of the season as they defeated Manhattan, 8-5, on March 9.
The River Hawks are led in scoring by graduate student Cory Highfield with 14 goals and 11 assists while Ben Martin now has four goals and 11 assists. Sophomore Jake Lining has 11 goals and five assists while sophomore Domenic Giachello has tallied eight goals and five assists. Senior goalkeeper Grant Lardieri has a 12.52 goals against average with 46 saves and a .440 save percentage. Freshman Matt Murakami has also seen time in net for the River Hawks, starting four games and saving 22 shots in 131 minutes of action.
Ed Stephenson is currently in his fourth season as head coach of the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse program. UMass Lowell is coming off three straight losses to UMass, Albany, and Providence. Stephenson led the River Hawks to an 8-8 record last season, finishing 3-3 in the America East Conference, clinching a spot in the conference tournament.
Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between St. John's and UMass Lowell. The Red Storm holds a 20-7 overall record against American East opponents, including, Hartford, Stony Brook, and Vermont.
