The Johnnies look to improve to 9-5 with two wins this weekend
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will continue its spring season this weekend with two matches in less than 24 hours. The Red Storm will be hosting Bryant in a Saturday night match at the USTA National Tennis Center before traveling to New Haven, Conn., to battle Yale on Sunday at noon.
St. John's enters the weekend with a 7-5 overall record, coming off of a 4-1 victory over Drexel last Saturday. The win over the Dragons snapped a two-match skid after losing to Princeton and Monmouth two weekends ago.
In doubles action against Drexel, the Red Storm and the Dragons traded wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 contests. After Alan Nunez Aguilera and Igor Maslov dropped their match, 7-5, in the No. 1 match, Luka Sucevic and Andrei Crapcenco forced a decisive third contest for the doubles point, winning the No. 2 match, 7-6.
The duo of Aditya Vashistha and Ognjen Trejgut battled valiantly in their bout but came up just short of gaining the doubles point for the Johnnies, falling 7-6.
In single's play, the Red Storm earned its first point of the match with a quick (6-0, 6-1) triumph in the No. 2 match by Nunez Aguilera over Drexel's Youssef Lahlou. Trejgut clinched the contest for the Johnnies, defeating Drexel's Gustav Wogen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, on the No. 6 court.
Bryant contains a 14-9 record heading into Saturday's showdown with the Johnnies. Matt Kuhar is 4-1 in his last three matches. Artur Jakubowski is also 4-1 in his last three matches, three of them coming in singles contests.
St. John's swept the Bulldogs, 4-0, the last time the two programs met on Feb. 24, 2017.
St. John's will look to get its first win over the Yale Bulldogs since the 2015-16 season. Last season, St. John's lost to Yale in the last singles match of the contest. Nunez Aguilera continued his great 2018 season with a thrilling, three-set triumph at the No. 2 position, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Yale's Ryan Cheng and Dylan King share perfect 6-0 records in their last three matches.
After this weekend's road trip, Dillon Pottish's squad will host the Butler Bulldogs at the USTA National Tennis Center on Saturday, March 30 at 4 p.m.
