St. John’s Gears Up for Penn Challenge

After a weekend off, the Red Storm heads to Franklin Field for the one-day meet
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (March 22, 2019) - The St. John's track and field team will continue its outdoor season at the third annual Penn Challenge, held at Franklin Field on Saturday, March 23.
Hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, the one-day meet will begin at 12 p.m., with the women's discus and the 100-meter dash. The event will feature 12 programs, including BIG EAST rival Georgetown. St. John's Head Coach Jim Hurt and his staff will send 29 participants to complete across 17 events in Philadelphia.
St. John's opened its outdoor season at the Carolina Coastal Invitational, before going on a one-week hiatus. The Johnnies finished with 15 top-three participants at the two-day event, including wins in the 4x100 meter relay, the 400-meter dash, the 400-meter hurdles and hammer throw events.
The 4x100-meter relay squad of Ja'Tae Joyner, Leah Anderson, Skyy Diop and Destiny Davis secured first place with a time of 48.13 seconds.
Anderson also sprinted into the top spot with a 400-meter time of 54.97 seconds. Fellow relay runner Diop followed in second, crossing the finish line at 56.71 seconds.
Chenoa Sebastian and Torisha LaForce finished in first and second, respectively, with times of 1:04.27 and 1:04.35 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Shannon Page also reached the podium in the mid-distance, 800-meter run with a second-best time of 2:19.48. In the 200-meter dash, Kafi Ottley registered a time of 25.13 seconds to secure second place in Myrtle Beach.
Ashley Walsh tossed a personal-best 44.05-meter hammer throw to finish in third place. Samantha Morillo also placed in the third in the discus with a distance of 41.31 meters. Shot putters Amarys Berry and Morillo garnered second and third place finishes with distances of 13.96 meters and 13.21 meters, respectively.
In the 2018 Penn Challenge, St. John's finished in sixth at Franklin Field. Page claimed the 800-meter run crown, finishing with a 2:15.39 time. Esmeralda Reyes, Olivia Pantale, and Winona Peace all reached the podium for the Johnnies. Reyes posted a second-best time of 28.56 in the 200-meter dash. She also added a fifth-place throw in the javelin. Peace recorded a 10.59-meter triple jump on her first attempt, good for third place. Pantale registered a third-place javelin throw with a distance of 40.52 meters on her final try.
