PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (March 23, 2019) – St. John's throwers put their talents on display at the Penn Challenge, leading the team to a sixth-place finish at Franklin Field on Saturday.
The Johnnies recorded 50 points at the one-day meet while the University of Pennsylvania paced the 12-team field with 182 points.
"We had some mixed results as our throwers had some personal record tosses and racked up some points, but the cold and windy conditions kept our performances down a bit," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "We are looking forward to seeing what we can do on the West Coast at the Stanford Invitational next week."
The Red Storm throwers led the charge with a pair of podium finishes. Amarys Berry posted a second-place distance for the second-straight week, tossing her shot put 14.58 meters. The junior downed her mark at the Coastal Carolina Invitational by 0.62 meters. Samantha Morillo also displayed a strong showing in Philadelphia, posting a fifth-best distance of 13.33 meters.
Senior Jennifer Odoemene added a third-place finish at Penn, also posting a pair of top-three finishes to open the 2019 outdoor campaign. The hammer thrower set a personal record at Franklin Field, slinging the weight 53.74 meters. She also added a seventh-place, 42.12-meter discus throw to her final marks of the weekend.
Esmeralda Reyes also achieved a new personal best mark, smashing her previous javelin throw by 1.18 meters. Her fifth-place distance of 43.10 meters at the Penn Challenge dethroned her top distance of 41.92 meters set at the 2018 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
Along with her new career best, Reyes joined Shannon Page, Kayla Parker, and Melissa Greaves on the Red Storm 4x100-meter relay squad and snatched the second-fastest time. The St. John's foursome crossed the finish line at 47.74 seconds, cutting .39 seconds from the team's time in Myrtle Beach two weeks ago.
Kafi Ottley shined in the 200-meter dash, securing eight of the Red Storm's 50 points on a second-best time of 25.55 seconds. The junior sprinter also posted a personal record time of 12.63 seconds in the 100-meter dash, placing fifth.
Ja'Tae Joyner crossed right after her teammate at 12.69 seconds to grab sixth. Torisha LaForce and Winona Peace also picked up top ten finishes, placing eighth and tenth, respectively.

Sophomore high jumper Eleftheria Christogeorgou scored a point for the Red Storm, leaping a personal-best 1.50 meters.
