Red Storm has won seven-consecutive contests heading into Wednesday’s midweek contest
Victorious in each of its last seven contests, the St. John's baseball team will look to make it eight in a row when the squad travels to Fairfield for a 3 p.m. tilt on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Baseball Diamond. A video stream and live stats for the game will be available at FairfieldStags.com.
St. John's (10-9) climbed above the .500 mark for the first time this season by virtue of a doubleheader sweep against Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium, a twin-bill that saw the Johnnies outscore the Pride, 18-1, and outhit their local rivals by a 30-9 margin. After going 3-9 in 12 road games, 10 of which were played in Southern California, to start the season, the Johnnies have won seven-straight in the Northeast by an average margin of 5.4 runs per outing.
2019 marks the sixth-straight season that the Johnnies have turned in at least one winning streak of seven games or more. From 2014-2018, the Red Storm recorded three separate win streaks of 11 games or more, including a 12-gamer last season that saw the Johnnies start BIG EAST play with three-consecutive sweeps.
The driving force behind the Red Storm's recent success has been the utter dominance of its pitching staff, which has not allowed an opponent to score more than three runs in 10 consecutive games. In five of those 10 appearances, the Johnnies have surrendered one run or fewer. Since the start of the team's series against No. 24 UC Irvine, the Johnnies have turned in a team ERA of 1.42 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.3-to-1. Over the span of the team's last seven games, the squad's ERA checks in even lower at 0.98 while the strikeout-to-walk ratio improves to 2.7-to-1.
In addition to excelling on the bump, the Red Storm has also boosted it production at the dish. Following their series with No. 24 UC Irvine, the Johnnies were hitting just .194 as a team with five of the squad's everyday starters sitting below the Mendoza Line. In the seven games since, the Red Storm is batting .296 with five starters hitting over .300 and seven of the team's everyday nine checking in at .296 or better. No one has been enjoying the Northeast quite as much as Rudy Aguilar, as the junior transfer from Ventura College is batting a team-best .480 over his last seven games with eight RBIs. Just one everyday starter is currently still hitting under .200 on the season while the Johnnies now boast seven players batting at a .250 clip or better.
Ian Murphy will make his fourth start of the season on Wednesday against the Stags. Despite still searching for his first career win, the freshman has impressed in his last two outings, striking out eight and allowing just three total hits in a combined seven innings of work. On March 13 against Iona, he struck out five and walked one while allowing just one hit in four frames of action. The Swedesboro, N.J., native has compiled a 2.38 ERA in 11.1 innings this season, good enough for fifth on the team.
Fairfield, which will host Central Connecticut State in its home opener on Tuesday afternoon, enters a pair of midweek matchups with an overall record of 7-12 coming off a series victory against Iona this past weekend.
The Stags are 5-3 in their last eight contests, having also split a midweek series with JMU after taking two of three from Brown.
The Stags are hitting just .244 as a team, but boast three batters hitting .320 or better. Senior Jack Gethings paces Fairfield with a .390 batting average in 19 appearances, all of which have been starts. Senior Anthony Boselli, the younger brother of 2018 St. John's graduate and Cincinnati Reds draft pick Rob Boselli, is batting .354 with a team-best 18 RBIs.
St. John's and Fairfield have met 34 times dating back to 1957 with the Johnnies owning a 29-5 advantage all-time in those contests. Before dropping a 2-1 decision to the Stags last year at Jack Kaiser Stadium on March 20, the Johnnies had won 14 in a row stretching back to 2006. After falling to 9-7 with that loss last spring, the Red Storm went 23-4 in its next 27 games en route to the program's ninth BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament titles.
The Red Storm and the Stags have met 10 times at Fairfield with the Johnnies holding an 8-2 advantage in those outings.
