ohnnies see seven-game winning streak come to an end against the Stags
Ahead 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, St. John's saw Fairfield score three runs in the decisive frame and claim a 4-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Baseball Diamond.
Sean McGeehan tallied a career-high four hits for the Johnnies, following a 3-for-4 performance in the series finale against Hofstra with a 4-for-5 showing against the Stags.
Mike Antico and Colin Wetterau also registered multi-hit outings, as Antico went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Wetterau turned in a 2-for-4, one-RBI performance.
Wyatt Mascarella and Ryan Markey added run-scoring base knocks for St. John's, which recorded 12 hits but left 13 runners on base.
St. John's struck first in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Wetterau. With runners on the corners and two outs, Wetterau slapped an opposite-field single over the head of the Fairfield third baseman, scoring Markey from third and putting the Johnnies on top, 1-0.
The Red Storm added onto its lead in the top of the third, plating a pair runs. Antico led off the inning with a walk before moving to second on a Carson Bartels grounder and taking third on a wild pitch. Mascarella then promptly dropped a single into right field and extended the St. John's lead to a pair. Following a free pass to Miller to put runners on first and second with one out, Markey drilled ball to deep left field that deflected off the glove of a drifting Stag fielder, scoring the runner from second and making it 3-0 in favor of the Red Storm.
Fairfield cut into the St. John's lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the third, as Tim Zeng pulled a one-out, one-run shot over the right field wall.
Fairfield left five runners on base over the next two frames, as Turner French worked to strand runners at second and third in the fourth before leaving the bags full of Stags in the fifth.
The Johnnies left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, but neither team managed to muster much of anything after that before the bottom of the ninth.
Entering the inning with a 3-1 deficit, Fairfield loaded the bases with no outs with back-to-back singles followed by a hit-by-pitch. Jack Gethings then ripped a two-run double to right, knotting the contest at three. Following an intentional walk to Anthony Boselli and a Dan Ryan fly-out to shallow left, Giacomo Brancato fell behind 0-2 before battling back and drawing the game-winning walk.
St. John's returns to action on Friday evening, traveling to Saint Louis University for a 7 p.m. ET showdown with the Billikens.
