Gavin Hollowell no-hit Anteaters for 2.2 innings in his first save of the year
The St. John's baseball team picked up its first ranked win of the season on Saturday night, as the Red Storm pitching staff held No. 24 UC Irvine without a hit for the final 6.1 innings of a 4-3 victory at Cicerone Field.
After Sean Mooney allowed two earned runs on four hits while striking out seven in five innings of work, three Red Storm relievers combined to shut the door on the Anteaters. Sam Lara, who picked up the win, retired all three UC Irvine batters he faced in the sixth. Chris Stefl recorded the first out of the seventh before handing the ball off to Gavin Hollowell, who struck out three over 2.2 innings of no-hit work to pick up his first save of the season.
Peter Abinanti extended his hitting streak to four with a career-best 3-for-4 outing in the leadoff spot. The redshirt junior outfielder also recorded a sac bunt.
Ryan Hogan logged his first multi-hit game of the year, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Despite failing to make an appearance in the starting lineup for the first time this season, Mitchell Henshaw delivered the game-winning hit for St. John's, lacing a pinch-hit, two-RBI single up the middle to put St. John's ahead, 4-3, in the top of the seventh.
Brandon Miller and Rudy Aguilar both singled and scored while Wyatt Mascarella registered a base knock for the fourth-straight game.
Carson Bartels went 0-for-2 on the evening but recorded three successful sacrifices to help the Johnnies piece together the victory.
UC Irvine broke through first with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Red Storm quickly knotted the contest at one in the top of the third. Hogan led off the frame with a single up the middle before advancing to second on an Aguilar walk and taking third on a sac bunt by Abinanti. The redshirt sophomore then came home on a balk.
The Anteaters tacked on two more in the third, but the Johnnies strung together three hits in the top of the fourth to trim the UC Irvine lead down to one, 3-2. Miller and Mascarella kicked off the frame with base knocks before Hogan brought home Miller with a two-out single up the middle, his second of the game.
After Mooney and Lara combined to retire 10-straight Anteaters, the Johnnies took their first lead of the series later in the top of the seventh. Aguilar and Abinanti led off the frame with consecutive singles before each moving 90 feet on a Bartels sac bunt. Two batters later, Henshaw pinch hit for Miller and delivered a two-run base knock up the middle, putting the Johnnies ahead 4-3 at the seventh-inning stretch.
St. John's and UC Irvine will close out their series tomorrow afternoon at Anteater Ballpark with a contest scheduled for a 4 p.m. ET first pitch.
