St. John’s to Square off with Providence and Bryant This Weekend

The Johnnies look to close the regular season with a 12-6 record
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will compete in its final two matches of the spring season in Providence, R.I, this Saturday. The Red Storm will battle BIG EAST foe Providence in a Saturday morning match at 11 a.m., before squaring off with Bryant at 4 p.m.
Head Coach Lauren Leo's squad (10-6) is coming off of a 4-1 win over DePaul on Sunday in Chicago. The victory on Sunday followed a 4-0 loss to Marquette two days prior.
In doubles play against DePaul, St. John's needed victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches after Jessica Livianu and Najah Dawson dropped their doubles bout, 6-4, on the No. 1 court.
In the No. 2 bout, Olaya Inclan Solis and Oceane Garibal wasted no time as they defeated DePaul's Aspasia Avgeri and Marija Jovicic, 6-3.
The No. 3 duo of Delia Arranz and Gabriela Tenorio clinched the doubles point for the Johnnies as they took care of the Blue Demons' Milica Tesic and Maddie Yergler of DePaul, 6-4.
In singles play, Dawson wrapped up her match against Alina Kuzmenkova in the No. 3 match, 6-3, 6-1, to give St. John's their first singles point of the match.
After Inclan Solis dropped her singles match to Aspasia Avgeri on the No. 2 court, 3-6, 3-6, Garibal and Arranz responded with clutch victories to seal the 4-1 win for the Johnnies.
In the No. 4 bout, Garibal took care of DePaul's Lenka Antonijevic, 7-5, 6-2. Arranz clinched the victory for the Red Storm in the No. 5 match, outlasting Maddie Yergler in a three-set thriller, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.
The Johnnies will compete against a Providence squad that currently holds a 5-16 record. The Friars have currently won two of their last three matches, but are winless against BIG EAST competition. In the last meeting between the two programs, St. John's swept Providence, 7-0, on April 8, 2018.
Bryant awaits the Red Storm on Saturday afternoon with a 7-8 record. The Bulldogs have lost its last four matches, dating back to March 29. Leading the way for Bryant is Arianna Oropeza, who is 12-4 for the year. Megan Tan and Aleski Gottlieb each have 10 total wins this season.
St. John's blanked Bryant, 7-0, in the last meeting between the two programs on March 26, 2017.
After this weekend's slate of matches, the Red Storm will venture to Cayce, S.C., to defend its conference title at the 2019 BIG EAST Championships from April 18-21.
