Red Storm will look to remain undefeated in Queens against non-league foes
The St. John's baseball team will wrap up a 10-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon, playing host to Stony Brook in a 3 p.m. contest at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The first meeting between St. John's and Stony Brook since 2013 will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
The Red Storm (22-14, 5-4 BIG EAST) will welcome the Seawolves (22-12, 11-4 America East) on the heels of a series victory over Villanova this past weekend. The three-game set was bookended by low-scoring affairs, as St. John's fell 5-1 in Thursday's opener before taking the finale, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon. In the middle game on Friday, the Red Storm exploded for a season-high 24 runs at NYIT's Lorenzo Memorial Field. During that barrage, Mike Antico recorded one of the best offensive outings by a St. John's player in nearly a decade, going 4-for-4 with three home runs, a double, two walks and seven RBIs. He became the first member of the Red Storm since eventual second round pick MLB Draft pick Jeremy Baltz to hit three or more home runs or drive in seven runs during a single game. Baltz blasted four round trippers and tallied seven RBIs at Louisville on May 14, 2010.
For his efforts, Antico was named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week and is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award/D1Baseball.com Performance of the Week. He also garnered BIG EAST Player of the Week accolades for the first time in his St. John's career.
Three other Johnnies left the yard this weekend against the Wildcats, as Ryan Markey lifted his first career home run, a grand slam, on Friday before Brandon Bossard and Mitchell Henshaw went deep with solo shots in Saturday's series finale. Both Bossard and Henshaw now each have three homers on the year, one behind Antico in second place on the squad and two behind team leader Sean McGeehan.
The Johnnies will look to remain undefeated at home against non-conference competition, as St. John's is 11-0 this season at Jack Kaiser Stadium against non-BIG EAST foes. In those 11 outings, the Red Storm is hitting .312 as a team while opponents are batting just .202. Seven St. John's pitchers sport a sub-two ERA against non-conference competition in Queens while the staff as a whole boasts a 2.47 ERA. On average, St. John's is outscoring non-BIG EAST opponents, 8.7 to 3.5.
Winners of six of their last eight and sitting in first place in the America East, Stony Brook will come to Queens looking to continue a hot stretch that has seen the team go 19-5 in its last 24 outings. In their last 24 games, the Johnnies are also 19-5.
The Seawolves are hitting .288 as a team, led by juniors Nick Grande and Michael Wilson. Grande is hitting a team-best .393 and reaching at a .484 clip while Wilson is batting .390 with five homers and 36 RBIs, 15 more than the next highest member of the squad. Grande has also swiped 17 bags on the season.
On the bump, Stony Brook carries a 5.24 staff ERA but also sports a team strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 2.4-to-1 (262-to-111).
St. John's and Stony Brook have met just twice in the history of the two programs with each side claiming one victory. The Seawolves kicked things off with a 7-5 win in 2001 before the Red Storm came away with a 12-inning, 7-1 victory on March 26, 2013, at Citi Field. The Johnnies scored six runs in the 12th inning of that contest, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Frank Schwindel.
