St. John’s Tops Stony Brook, 6-3, in Midweek Action

Nick Mondak struck out four in five one-run innings of work
The St. John's baseball team collected its 20th win in its last 25 tries on Tuesday afternoon, outlasting Stony Brook, 6-3, at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
With the win, St. John's (23-14) remained undefeated at home against non-conference competition this season (12-0).
Turner French improved to 2-0 on the campaign while Joe Kelly registered his team-high fourth save. Nick Mondak threw a career-high 5.0 innings in a no decision after exiting with the lead. The junior struck out four, walked one and allowed a lone runner to cross the plate.
The Johnnies tallied 11 hits against Stony Brook (22-13), who will enter the weekend occupying the top spot in the America East standings. Ryan Hogan went 3-for-4 and scored twice while Mike Antico, Carson Bartels and Brandon Bossard picked up two hits apiece. Bossard's second hit of the day helped seal the contest, as he laced a two-run triple to right center in the bottom of the eighth.
Brandon Miller, Ryan Markey and Colin Wetterau also drove in runs for St. John's on the afternoon.
St. John's jumped out to an early lead, plating single runs in the first and second innings to move ahead 2-0 after two. Bartels and Miller set up the first-inning run with back-to-back one out singles, the latter of which moved Bartels to third and allowed him to score on a Markey sac fly to right the following at-bat. In the bottom of the second, Hogan doubled down the left field line with one out before advancing to third on a wild pitch and coming home on a Wetterau grounder to second.
Stony Brook got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a pair of wild pitches and trimming the Red Storm advantage to one, 2-1, after four and a half.
The Red Storm restored its lead to two, 3-1, in the bottom of the sixth, as Andrew DuPont drew a pinch-hit, leadoff walk before stealing second, advancing to third on a grounder and scoring on a wild pitch.
That two-run edge came off the board in the in the top of the seventh, as a two-RBI double to left center off the bat of Brandon Alamo evened the score at three apiece.
The Johnnies answered right back in the home half, as Bossard led off the inning with a walk, advanced to third on an Antico single and scored on a Miller sac fly to center.
After Ben Greenberg and Ethan Routzahn combined to throw a scoreless top of the eighth, Bossard's two-run triple helped seal the deal in the home half. Hogan and Sean McGeehan singled to set up the pivotal hit by Bossard, who now has hits in 10 of his last 11 games and is hitting .366 over that stretch.
The Red Storm will next be in action on Friday night, when the Johnnies travel to our nation's capital for the opener of a three-game set against Georgetown.
