Junior lefthander allowed one hit and an unearned run in seven innings of work
Behind another stellar effort on the mound from junior southpaw Joe LaSorsa, the St. John's baseball team took its BIG EAST opener against Butler, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at Bulldog Park.
The Johnnies (15-10), who will look to clinch their 12th straight BIG EAST series victory on Saturday, have now won 12 of their last 13 games dating back to March 13.
LaSorsa threw yet another gem for St. John's on Friday afternoon, tossing seven innings of one-hit ball to improve to 4-2 on the year. He surrendered just one unearned run, two hits and a pair of walks while striking out seven. In his last five outings, LaSorsa is now 4-1 with a 0.27 ERA in 33.2 innings of work. On the season, the Katonah, N.Y., native's ERA now sits at 1.23.
Joe Kelly shut the door for his third save in the team's last five games, tossing two shutout innings in relief of LaSorsa.
Ryan Markey drove in three of the team's four runs on the afternoon, smacking a two-run double in the third before lifting a sac fly in the seventh. Carson Bartels brought home the other tally for St. John's with an RBI single in the fourth.
Mike Antico went 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice while Wyatt Mascarella and Peter Abinanti each added a hit and a run scored for St. John's.
Following a pair of scoreless frames from both sides to start the game, St. John's jumped ahead in the top of the third. Antico and Mascarella reached on balls before Markey cleared the bases with a two-run two-bagger to left center, giving the Red Storm's a 2-0 edge after two and a half.
The Johnnies added another tally in the top of the fourth, as Abinanti drew a leadoff walk before advancing to second on a Rudy Aguilar sac bunt. Two batters later, Bartels ripped a two-out single up the middle, scoring Abinanti and extending the St. John's advantage to three.
Butler pulled within two in the bottom of the sixth, plating a single run on a wild pitch, but the Johnnies promptly responded with another run of their own in the seventh. Antico led off the frame with a double before moving to third on a Bartels sac bunt and scoring on a Markey sac fly to center.
The Bulldogs threatened with three hits in the eighth and ninth innings, but Kelly managed to keep Butler off the board and seal the St. John's victory.
The two teams will return to action tomorrow afternoon at Bulldog Park beginning at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Butler Athletics' Facebook page.
