Red Storm dropped game one before game two was cut short
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 6, 2019) – After St. John's tallied two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the contest at four apiece, the Red Storm and Butler halted game two of their doubleheader after nine innings due to darkness. The two teams will attempt to resume the contest tomorrow at 12 p.m.
Game one resulted in a victory for the Bulldogs, who knotted the series following St. John's Friday win.
Game One Recap
Despite outhitting the Bulldogs, 15-9, the Red Storm dropped the opening contest of Saturday's doubleheader, 11-7, to even the series at a game apiece.
Of the 11 runs that were conceded by St. John's, only three were earned. The Red Storm committed three errors on the game.
Sean Mooney struck out nine in 5.2 innings, but was saddled with his first loss of the year. He was tagged with eight runs, only one of which was earned.
Six Johnnies recorded multi-hit outings. Wyatt Mascarella, Ryan Markey and Mitchell Henshaw tallied two knocks and two RBIs apiece.
Carson Bartels went 2-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored while Ryan Hogan turned in a 2-for-5 outing with a double. Mike Antico logged a team-high three hits to go along with two runs scored.
St. John's wasted no time getting on the board, as Henshaw ripped a two-out single up the middle to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead after a half an inning.
The Bulldogs answered in the home half of the second, as a Harrison Freed grand slam highlighted a six-run frame, putting the Johnnies in a five-run hole after two.
Henshaw recorded his second RBI base knock of the day in the top of the third, pulling the Johnnies within four.
After keeping Butler off the board in the home half of the inning, the Red Storm closed the gap in the top of the fourth. Following a leadoff groundout, six-straight Johnnies reached base to plate four runs and tie the game at six. Hogan, Aguilar, and Antico all singled to load the bags before a Bartels base knock scored the inning's first tally. After Mascarella was hit by a pitch to notch another run, a Markey single through the left side brought home two more runs and tied the game at six.
Butler jumped back ahead in the bottom of the sixth, as Freed belted his second homer of the game, this one of the three-run variety, to put the Bulldogs ahead 9-6.
Butler pushed across two more runs in the seventh before the Johnnies trimmed the lead to four, 11-7, in the top of the eighth on a Mascarella RBI double.
Game Two
Butler opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second, using a walk and a pair of singles to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm responded with a run to tie things up in the top of the third, as McGeehan tripled before scoring on a wild pitch.
Butler climbed back ahead in the home half of the frame, before the Red Storm knotted things up again in the fifth. Bartels singled to lead off the frame before eventually coming around to score on a wild pitch a few batters later.
The Bulldogs retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh, using four singles to plate two runs and move ahead by two, 4-2.
Heading into the top of the ninth in need of two runs to extend the game, the Red Storm got just that. Antico drew a leadoff walk before scoring on a Mascarella double. After pinch running for Mascarella, Andrew DuPont promptly scored on a Brandon Bossard single to tie the contest at four.
Following a scoreless bottom of the ninth from Joe Kelly, the game was suspended due to darkness.
