Johnnies lose to Knights for the first time since 1987
TEANECK, N.J. (May 1, 2019) – After jumping out to a 3-0 lead early in the contest, the St. John's baseball team saw Fairleigh Dickinson score five unanswered runs before holding on for a 5-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
St. John's (24-18) had won 27 straight contests against FDU dating back to 1990. The Knights (12-30-1) had not topped the Red Storm on the diamond since 1987.
The Johnnies were limited to just five hits on the afternoon. Mitchell Henshaw led the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
Sean McGeehan blasted his team-leading sixth home run of the season, giving the Red Storm the game's first lead in the top of the second. Carson Bartels added an RBI for St. John's while Ryan Hogan and Brandon Miller both singled and scored a run.
FDU threatened by loading the bases in the bottom of the first, but Matt Semon managed to work his way out of trouble and hold the Knights off the board early.
The Red Storm struck first the following inning, as Miller drew a leadoff four-pitch walk before McGeehan scored them both, pulling a two-run shot down the left field line and putting the Red Storm ahead by a pair. The Johnnies added another run later in the frame, as Bartels drew a bases loaded walk to make it 3-0 in favor of the Red Storm after an inning and a half.
FDU pulled within one on a two-run homer from Sal Monticciolo in the bottom of the third before a two-RBI base knock off the bat of Tony Socci gave the Knights their first lead of the game, 4-3, in the home half of the fifth. Monticciolo added his second round tripper of the afternoon, a solo shot, in the seventh to put the Knights on top by a pair.
St. John's cut into the FDU lead in the top of the eighth, as Wyatt Mascarella walked to spark a two-out rally before back-to-back base knocks from Hogan and Henshaw scored the senior and brought the Red Storm within one, 5-4. That was as close as the Johnnies would get; however, as the Red Storm fell for the fourth time in its last five tries.
The Red Storm will return to action on Saturday afternoon, welcoming Princeton for a doubleheader at Jack Kaiser Stadium beginning at 12 p.m. The two teams will then conclude their series with a single game at Princeton's Clarke Field on Sunday afternoon.
