Red Storm will look to remain undefeated in non-conference play at Jack Kaiser Stadium
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 3, 2019) – The St. John's baseball team will play its final non-conference series of the season tomorrow afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium, welcoming Princeton for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on ESPN3. The Red Storm and the Tigers were originally scheduled to finish their series on Sunday afternoon at Princeton, but that contest has been canceled due to an inclement weather forecast.
St. John's (24-18) enters Saturday's doubleheader after splitting a pair of midweek matchups. The Red Storm topped Iona, 6-1, on Tuesday before falling to Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday afternoon in Teaneck. The win over Iona bumped the Johnnies' record to 13-0 against non-conference opponents at home. The Johnnies are hitting .312 as a team in those 13 victories and outscoring the opposition by an average margin of 8.3 to 3.2 runs per game. The Red Storm's pitching staff has compiled an ERA of 2.33 at home against non-BIG EAST teams this season.
Making just the seventh appearance of his collegiate career, Nick Mondak put forth a stellar effort on Tuesday against the Gaels. The junior southpaw delivered six brilliant innings of shutout work, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out 10 over that span. Mondak's 10 punchouts were the most by a St. John's pitcher in an outing this season and doubled his previous career-high of five achieved during the lone appearance of his freshman campaign back in 2017.
Sean McGeehan picked up a hit in each of the Red Storm's midweek contests, extending his team-best hitting streak to six games. On Wednesday, the junior center fielder recorded his team-high sixth home run of the year, launching a two-run shot down the left field line to give the Red Storm an early lead. Last season, only three members of the Johnnies tallied six or more home runs on the season, as Jamie Galazin logged six, Luke Stampfl smacked seven and Anthony Brocato blasted 11. Over the Johnnies' last 10 games, McGeehan is hitting a team-high .379.
Joe LaSorsa and Ian Murphy are scheduled to start for the Red Storm in Saturday's doubleheader. LaSorsa has gone winless in his last three starts despite surrendering just six earned runs over that stretch. Through games played on Thursday, LaSorsa ranks 17th nationally with a 1.73 ERA.
Last weekend at Georgetown, the Red Storm's bullpen allowed only two earned runs and six hits in 11.1 innings of work. Joe Kelly and Turner French combined for four frames on shutout, one-hit ball in the series opener while Gavin Hollowell struck out a career-best eight batters in four innings on Sunday.
Princeton (13-23) is coming off of an 11-5 loss to Brown on Sunday, snapping its longest winning streak of the season at four games. The Tigers combined for 19 runs during that victorious stretch, defeating the Bears twice while picking up single wins against Cornell and Villanova.
Saturday's projected starters, Ryan Smith and James Proctor, have combined to throw three complete games so far in 2019. Andrew Gnazzo, who registered the win against St. John's in 2017 as a freshman, has also added another.
The Red Storm boasts a 24-18 record against Princeton since the teams' first meeting in 1967 with 11 of its wins coming in Queens.
St. John's will face off against Princeton for the first time since 2017, when the Johnnies dropped a decision on April 26, 4-2, despite receiving 5.1 shutout frames of relief from French, Kelly, LaSorsa and Hollowell.
