Red Storm moves closer to postseason berth with thrilling come-from-behind victory
With the win, the Red Storm (29-21, 8-9 BIG EAST) is now just one win away from securing a spot in its 16th consecutive BIG EAST Tournament. The Johnnies can also guarantee a berth if Georgetown prevails in one of its final two games against Butler. A victory tomorrow in the Red Storm's series finale with Seton Hall (25-25, 9-8 BIG EAST) would give the Johnnies the no. 3 seed in next week's BIG EAST Baseball Championship.
Ryan Hogan delivered the heroics for St. John's, chopping a single through the right side to score Mitchell Henshaw and Brandon Miller. Henshaw and Miller both recorded two-out hits in the at-bats leading up to Hogan's game-winning base knock, as Henshaw singled to right before Miller ripped an RBI double down the left field line. Both of those hits came with two strikes as well. Earlier in the frame, Carson Bartels reached on an error and Mike Antico doubled to set up a sac fly off the bat of Ryan Markey.
Miller, Hogan and Markey all drove in two runs on the afternoon. Josh Greene also added an RBI for the Johnnies, who outhit the Pirates, 11-8.
Ben Greenberg picked up the win by virtue of recording two outs on four pitches in the top of the ninth. Jeff Belge started the game and surrendered just one hit in 4.2 innings of work in a no-decision.
St. John's loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first, but freshman Brennan O'Neill set down the next three batters he faced to exit the inning unscathed.
The Red Storm threatened again in the third and fourth innings, but could not convert. Wyatt Mascarella grounded into an inning-ending double play with runners on first and second in the bottom of the third before Markey was stranded at third after smacking a leadoff double in the fourth.
Seton Hall struck first in the top of the fifth, as Tyler Shedler-McAvoy poked an RBI single with two outs to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Seton Hall would add two more runs before the inning was through, as Christian Del Castillo smacked a run-scoring triple off the wall in right center before scoring one batter later on a throwing error.
St. John's answered with a single tally in the home half of the frame, as Markey drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Red Storm its first run of the day and trim the deficit to a pair, 3-1. Bartels and Peter Abinanti recorded singles before Mascarella walked to set up the run scoring effort form Markey.
The teams traded two-run blows in the eighth inning, as Steven Grober blasted a two-run shot in the top of the frame before the Red Storm responded in the home half. Mascarella led it off with a single to left before Markey banged a two-bagger off the wall to give the Johnnies runners on second and third with no out. Greene and Miller scored both runners with RBI groundouts to the second in consecutive at-bats, bringing the Johnnies back within two, 5-3, heading into the ninth.
Seton Hall added an insurance run in the ninth as Del Castillo registered his second RBI extra-base hit with a double to the gap in right center, but it was not enough to hold off the Johnnies in the home half of the inning.
St. John's and Seton Hall will wrap their regular seasons with a 1 p.m. contest tomorrow afternoon on CBS Sports Network.
