The Johnnies record their second shutout of the season
The St. John's women's soccer team broke through offensively on Saturday afternoon, topping Cornell, 2-0, in the final game of the team's non-conference schedule.
Zsani Kajan led the way for the Johnnies on Saturday, scoring the eventual game winner in the 44th minute before adding an insurance marker in the 69th. The effort marked the redshirt junior's first multi-goal outing of the season and the fourth of her career.
Kajan, who leads the team in scoring with four goals on the season, also unleashed a game-high nine shots, five of which were on target. Alex Madden, Sofia Ambrosio, and Kayla Mesaros accounted for the Red Storm's three other attempts on goal but were turned aside by Cornell's keeper.
Mesaros etched her name on the score sheet for the first time this season, assisting on Kajan's first goal.
St. John's (3-6-0) outshot the Big Red (4-2-1) by a 22-2 margin in the game, including an 8-1 advantage on goal. The Red Storm's 22 shots on the afternoon marked the team's highest single-game output of the season.
Meredith Reinhardt and Naya Lipkens split time in net for the Red Storm, helping the Johnnies to their second shutout of the campaign.
The Johnnies registered 12 first-half shots before Kajan broke through on the 13th in the 44th minute. The sequence began as Mesaros beat out her defender to possess the ball. The sophomore from Royersford, Pa., then played a magnificent through ball into the box for a streaking Kajan. The 5-foot-7 forward tapped her shot to the left corner of the cage to give the Johnnies a 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm maintained its unrelenting offensive pressure on the other side of the intermission as Kajan, Madden and Isabelle Aviza fired off five more shots in the opening minutes of the second period.
The Johnnies extended their lead in the 69th minute, as Kajan converted on a penalty kick. The Budapest, Hungary, native sent a powerful strike to her left side to seal the victory for the Red Storm, 2-0.
St. John's returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, traveling to Providence, R.I., to open conference play with the Friars. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
