St. John’s Captures Metropolitan Indoor Championship Title

The Red Storm led the field with 160 overall points
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2020) – After picking up 12 top three finishes across nine events, the St. John's track & field team captured the 2020 Metropolitan Indoor Championship title on Friday afternoon at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
The Red Storm finished the meet with 160 total points while Rutgers followed in second with 142.
"I am so pleased about the effort that our team put out in winning the Metropolitan Championship," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "It took a full team effort to get to the top of the podium. We scored in most events and had people step up over the two-day meet. Being number one in New York City is a great accomplishment and I am very proud of what our coaching staff and team accomplished."
Leah Anderson helped give the Johnnies a strong start to the day after taking first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.52 while junior Onassha Rogers finished in third with a mark of 7.67. Anderson's performance puts her at second place on the BIG EAST leaderboard this season. The junior also placed second in the 500 meters with a time of 1:13.82.
Senior sprinter Destiny Davis earned a spot on the podium in the 200 meters after recording a time of 24.74, good enough for second place. Avon Samuels finished in third with a mark of 24.89 while Skyy Diop's time of 25.48 put her in 10th place.
Samuels followed that performance by grabbing first place in the 400 meters with a time of 55.94 as Diop crossed the finish line with a mark of 24.89 to sit in third. Sophomore Brianna Burkley also came in seventh place after registering a time of 57.66.
Anderson, Burkley, Diop and Samuels captured the Red Storm's final win of the day in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:43.87. The mark puts St. John's in first place on the conference leaderboard and ranks 46th in the nation.
Stephanie Gerland placed second in the mile with a time of 5:06.25 while Freshman Claire Cushing finished the 800 meters in fourth with a mark of 2:19.07.
Antonia Frazier took second place in the pentathlon after racking up 3140 points. Esmeralda Reyes followed close behind with a fourth-place finish in the event.
Assistant Coach John McCree's throwers had a strong showing throughout the two-day meet with Amarys Berry placing second in the shot put after posting a distance of 14.78 meters. Najeaya Singleton also finished in fourth with a mark of 14.09 meters.
Bernadette McGowan placed third in the weight throw after recording a distance of 16.27 meters. Ashley Walsh, Berry and Samantha Morillo earned fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively.
The Red Storm returns to action when the team heads to the Armory for the NYRR Millrose Games on Sunday, Feb. 9.
