The Red Storm will look to defeat Stony Brook for the first time since 2015 on Tuesday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2020) – After falling in the 2020 season opener at No. 17/RV/RV Rutgers on Saturday, the Red Storm will hit the road for the second time this season to square off with local foe Stony Brook on Tuesday at LaValle Stadium.
The game will be broadcast live on American East TV with Joe Caccavale and Andrew Zucker on the call. Updates will be provided throughout the game on Twitter by following the handle @StJohnsLax.
St. John's looks to capture its first victory of the 2020 season on Tuesday and its first win over Stony Brook since February 14, 2015, when the Johnnies topped the Seawolves at DaSilva Memorial Field, 13-8. The Red Storm's last victory over a New York opponent occurred on March 24, 2018, when Coach Miller's squad knocked off No. 19/18 Hofstra at home, 9-8.
Tuesday's contest will mark the 12th overall meeting and the 11th-consecutive season St. John's and Stony Brook will square off in the regular season. The Seawolves hold an 8-4 lead in the series history. In the last showdown between the two programs, St. John's fell dramatically, 12-11, at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Stony Brook will start its 2020 campaign on Tuesday night when they host the Red Storm at LaValle Stadium. Anthony Gilardi became Stony Brook's men's lacrosse head coach on June 20, 2020. Gilardi came to Long Island after spending eight successful seasons with the Towson Tigers, having served as Associate Head Coach for the past six. During his tenure at Towson, Gilardi helped guide the team to five CAA Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. Most recently, the 2019 Towson team made program history, being ranked No. 1 in the national polls for the first time while earning the No. 6 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Seawolves have 37 returnees and a dozen newcomers, including 10 freshmen. Among those returners are a pair of first-team All-America East performers, senior attacker Tom Haun and senior midfielder Chris Pickel Jr. A trio of second-team all-conference selections are also returning, senior goalie Michael Bollinger, senior midfielder Harrison Matsuoka, and junior defenseman Danny Cassidy.
The Seawolves, the 2019 America East regular-season champions, were picked fourth in the league's preseason poll, which was released on January 27. Stony Brook received 24 points in the poll, with one first-place vote. The Seawolves find themselves picked behind Vermont, UMBC, and UAlbany.
In St. John's first game of the 2020 season, St. John's fell at No. 17/RV/RV Rutgers, 17-10, on a blustery cold Saturday at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, N.J.
Freshman faceoff specialist Jonathan Dugenio was phenomenal at the X in last week's season opener at No. 17/RV/RV Rutgers, 17-10. The Bridgewater, N.J., native won a remarkable 25-of-31 faceoffs in his first collegiate game. The 25 faceoff wins marked a team-high since the St. John's lacrosse program was reinstated in 2005.
Seniors Mike Madsen and Joe Madsen led the way offensively for St. John's (0-1), as the duo each fired three goals past Rutgers (2-0) goalkeeper Stephen Russo.
Three other Johnnies scored in the season opener, including senior Ryan Schaeffer who registered two tallies. Dugenio and Grant Galligan both scored one goal apiece and freshman Connor Kalmus dished two assists to round out St. John's offense.
After Tuesday night's matchup with the Seawolves, the Red Storm will host Hartford in St. John's home opener at DaSilva Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. ET.
