St. John’s Falls to Stony Brook in Overtime, 13-12

Mike Madsen’s five-goal performance carried the Johnnies in Tuesday night’s loss in overtime
STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2020) – Despite a five-goal performance from BIG EAST Preseason Team selection Mike Madsen, St. John's dropped its second contest of the season on Tuesday in heartbreaking fashion, falling in overtime to Stony Brook, 13-12.
Seniors Mike and Joe Madsen led the way offensively for St. John's (0-2), as the duo combined for seven goals in the losing effort.
Patrick Ednie scored his first career goal in the first quarter to give St. John's its first tally of the contest. Matt Duncan and Matt Oehl scored their first goals of the 2020 campaign in the first quarter. Senior Ryan Schaeffer scored in his second-straight appearance, finishing with two scores and an assist.
After a shaky season opener against No. 17 Rutgers last Saturday, sophomore goalkeeper Brody Agres responded with a season-high 14 saves.
Freshman faceoff specialist Jonathan Dugenio continues to impress at the X as the Bridgewater, N.J., native won 17-of-28 faceoff attempts, primarily against Stony Brook's Renz Conlon. Senior Colin Bosak made his season debut against the Seawolves, losing his lone faceoff attempt in the third period.
Stony Brook (1-0) was led by senior attackman Tom Haun who scored on three of his four total shots. Chris Pickel Jr., Cory Vanginhoven, Patrick Kaschalk, and Caleb Pearson and each finished with two goals and senior goalkeeper Michael Bollinger registered 13 saves in his season debut
The Red Storm outshot the Seawolves 50-43 in Tuesday night's loss and won the turnover battle, only committing 14 compared to Stony Brook's 20 turnovers. St. John's was successful in clearing the ball against the Seawolves, advancing the ball into the offensive zone in all but two of its 23 tries.
St. John's started the contest red-hot, controlling the pace of play for the first 10 and a half minutes of play. The Red Storm's 16 shots in the first quarter led to three unanswered goals from Ednie, Duncan, and Oehl, giving the Red Storm an early 3-0 lead with 4:33 on the clock. The Johnnies were inching close to their first period without letting up a goal since their win over No. 19/18 Hofstra on March 24, 2018, but Stony Brook's Patrick Kaschalk scored the Seawolves' first goal of the contest to close the opening frame.
Both team's offensive units were on display in the second quarter as the Red Storm and the Seawolves combined to score 10 goals. Both teams traded the first six goals of the second frame with six minutes left in the half. After Joe Madsen gave St. John's a 7-4 lead with 3:58 left in the second, Stony Brook's Tom Haun, Chris Pickel Jr., and Caleb Pearson scored three-consecutive goals to close the half at a 7-7 deadlock.
St. John's opened the second half with two Mike Madsen goals, giving the Red Storm a two-goal, 9-7 lead with 6:40 left in the third frame. The momentum quickly shifted in favor of Stony Brook for the remainder of the period. The Seawolves scored four unanswered goals to close the third quarter, two coming from Haun with a man advantage and the other two from Mike McCannell and Cory Vanginoven. Stony Brook's 17 shots and two man-up goals enabled them to take an 11-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Johnnies saw their deficit increase to three goals when Chris Pickel Jr. scored Stony Brook's first goal of the final period to give his team a 12-9 lead. With 4:40 left in the game, the Red Storm refused to quit as Mike Madsen scored his fourth goal of the contest to bring his team within two goals. 90 seconds later it was Schaeffer who tallied his second goal to bring the Johnnies' deficit to just one goal at 12-11. Mike Madsen's second goal of the quarter and fifth of the contest tied the score at 12 with just 2:08 left to play. Both teams would have one last chance to fire a goal in regulation but both defensive units remained composed and ensured the overtime session.
Dugenio secured the opening faceoff, giving St. John's the first possession of the overtime period. Mike Madsen attempted a shot that missed wide, changing the possession in favor of Stony Brook. Dylan Willis caused a turnover on the Seawolves' first possession in overtime. The Johnnies raced down the field for a breakaway attempt capped off by a low shot fired by Ednie that nearly split the legs of Stony Brook goalkeeper Michael Bollinger. Stony Brook clinched the victory on the ensuing possession as Caleb Pearson fired a shot past Agres with seven seconds left in the first overtime session to give Anthony Gilardi his first victory as head coach of the Seawolves.
The Red Storm returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 15, when Head Coach Jason Miller's squad hosts Hartford for the first game of the 2020 season at DaSilva Memorial Field. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
