The Red Storm looks to win its first home opener since the 2015 season this Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2020) – The Red Storm returns to action on Saturday to host the Hartford Hawks, five days removed from dropping its second contest of the season in overtime at Stony Brook, 13-12.
Head Coach Jason Miller's squad looks to capture its first triumph in a home opener since the Johnnies topped Stony Brook at DaSilva Memorial Field, 13-5, on Feb. 14, 2015. A victory on Saturday would mark St. John's first win since March 23, 2019, when the Red Storm bounced UMass-Lowell at home, 15-13.
Coverage of Saturday's game at DaSilva Memorial Field will be broadcasted live on ESPN3 with James Corrigan on the call.
After falling in their season opener at home last weekend to Sacred Heart, Hartford will look to win their first game of the 2020 campaign on Saturday against the Johnnies.
Ryan Martin enters his fourth season as head coach of the University of Hartford men's lacrosse team in 2019. This is his sixth year with the Hawks, as he was previously an assistant on the Hawks' coaching staff in 2015 and 2016.
Hartford is led by senior co-captain Ryan Lovell, a long-stick midfielder from Wakefield, Mass., who is coming off a breakout junior season that saw him register a team and career-best 58 ground balls in 15 games. Senior Midfielder Owen Trepeta was a key contributor to Hartford's offense last season. He compiled a career-high 35 points behind 30 goals, including eight man-up tallies, which ranked him No. 4 in the nation in the category.
Hartford was picked fourth in the league's preseason poll, which was released on January 27. Stony Brook received six points in the poll. The Hawks find themselves picked behind Vermont, UMBC, UAlbany, Stony Brook, UMass-Lowell, and Binghamton.
Saturday's contest will mark the seventh overall meeting and the third-consecutive season St. John's and Hartford will square off in the regular season.
The Johnnies have won all six of the contests in the series history. In the last showdown between the two programs, St. John's dropped the Hawks at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium, 18-10, on Feb. 26, 2019.
Jonathan Huber paced the way offensively for St. John's in last year's contest as the attackman ended the day with a combined seven points (five goals, 2 assists) and led the Johnnies with 12 total shots.
Seniors Mike and Joe Madsen led the way offensively for St. John's, as the duo combined for seven goals in the losing effort. BIG EAST Preseason Team selection Mike Madsen scored a career-high five goals in Tuesday night's loss. The midfielder from Locust Valley, N.Y., leads the Red Storm with eight goals this season.
Patrick Ednie scored his first career goal in the first quarter to give St. John's its first tally of the contest. Matt Duncan and Matt Oehl scored their first goals of the 2020 campaign in the first quarter. Senior Ryan Schaeffer scored in his second-straight appearance, finishing with two scores and an assist.
After a shaky season opener against No. 17 Rutgers last Saturday, sophomore goalkeeper Brody Agres responded with a season-high 14 saves.
Freshman faceoff specialist Jonathan Dugenio continues to impress at the X as the Bridgewater, N.J., native won 17-of-28 faceoff attempts, primarily against Stony Brook's Renz Conlon. Senior Colin Bosak made his season debut against the Seawolves, losing his lone faceoff attempt in the third period.
The Red Storm outshot the Seawolves 50-43 in Tuesday night's loss and won the turnover battle, only committing 14 compared to Stony Brook's 20 turnovers. St. John's was successful in clearing the ball against the Seawolves, advancing the ball into the offensive zone in all but two of its 23 tries.
After Saturday's home opener, the Red Storm will venture to Brookville, N.Y., to square off with LIU at Bethpage Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. ET.
