Red Storm and Golden Bears to begin their series on Friday night in Berkeley
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2020) – After kicking off the first weekend of the Mike Hampton Era with a nationally ranked win, the St. John's baseball team will return to action on the West Coast, traveling to Berkeley for a three-game set with the Golden Bears of California.
Start times for the Friday-Sunday series are 9 p.m., 6 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. All three games will be available for live stream on Pac-12.com with live stats available at statbroadcast.com.
The Red Storm began the 2020 campaign with a 1-2 effort at the Atlanta Challenge. The Johnnies dropped back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday at Kennesaw State and Georgia State before closing the weekend with a 11-1 drubbing of No. 19 Georgia Tech. The Red Storm has now collected at least one win against a ranked opponent in each of the last six seasons and has a 3-0 record against the ACC in regular season play dating back to 2017.
Sophomore Ian Murphy was dominant on the hill against the Yellow Jackets, striking out a career-high nine batters and allowing just two hits in five frames of scoreless work. The right-hander from Swedesboro, N.J., allowed just two runners to reach scoring position on the afternoon. Murphy, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, was one of two starters to not surrender an earned run on opening weekend, as Nick Mondak suffered a hard-luck loss in the opener against Kennesaw State on Friday. The senior southpaw from Watertown, Conn., saw two unearned runs lead to his loss, as he struck out seven and walked one in five innings of two-hit work.
Freshman Jake Lazzaro led the way offensively for the Red Storm in Atlanta, going 6-for-9 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI in two starts. The Oceanside, N.Y., native went 3-for-5 in his first career start against Georgia State before going 3-for-4 with a walk against the Yellow Jackets. Through games played on Tuesday, the freshman's .667 batting average ranks sixth nationally.
Lazzaro was one of five Johnnies to hit .300 or better on opening weekend. Mike Antico batted .500 in limited action while fellow senior Carson Bartels hit .385 with two RBIs. Mitchell Henshaw went 3-for-9 in two starts while Justin Folz went 4-for-13 (.308) while logging a team-high four RBIs. The junior transfer from Palomar Community College doubled and homered in the Johnnies' win over Georgia Tech.
The Red Storm returns to California for the second straight season and will look to fare better than it did in The Golden State during 2019. The Johnnies played 10 games in California during February and early March, going 2-8 in those contests. The Red Storm was swept by No. 3 UCLA before going 1-2 in series with No. 24 UC Irvine and the University of San Diego. The Johnnies also dropped a midweek affair to Cal State Northridge.
Cal enters the weekend with a 1-3 record, having dropped its season-opening series to Long Beach State before losing a Monday tilt at UC Santa Barbara. Grant Holman, who is also the team's Saturday starter, leads the Golden Bears with a .357 batting average. He was one of two Cal players to hit .300 or better during the opening week of play, as Quentin Selma went 6-for-18 with a team-high seven RBIs.
Sophomore right-hander Sam Stoutenborough, the team's Friday starter, threw six scoreless innings in his 2020 debut, which the Bears lost in 13 innings, 4-3.
St. John's and Cal have met twice before in the history of the two programs. The Golden Bears emerged victorious in both of those matchups, the first of which knocked St. John's out of the 1980 College World Series and the second of which came in March of 1983.
