Red Storm will go for the sweep tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET
BERKELEY, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2020) – Three St. John's pitchers held California to just four hits, as the Red Storm won its third straight game, 3-1, and clinched a series win at Evans Diamond on Saturday afternoon.
After a shaky start, Joe Joe Rodriguez settled in and locked down the Golden Bears (1-5) over six innings of one-hit work. The junior from Vineland, N.J., allowed one run, struck out two and walked five en route to his first win as a Johnnie. The right-hander threw 98 pitches, 50 of which were strikes.
Geoff Mosseau relieved Rodriguez with two scoreless frames before Ethan Routzahn kept Cal off the board in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Both of St. John's RBIs came in the form of sixth inning doubles, as Mitchell Henshaw and Sean McGeehan delivered run-scoring two baggers in the decisive frame. Henshaw went 2-for-4, marking his third straight multi-hit game.
Mike Antico, Justin Folz, Ryan Markey and Colin Wetterau also singled in the Red Storm's series-clinching victory. Freshman Jake Lazzaro failed to record a hit for the first time as a Johnnie, but still managed to walk twice and score.
Rodriguez struggled to find the strike zone early, walking Cal's first two batters of the game, both of whom then swiped a bag to put runners on second and third with no outs. The Golden Bears, however, managed just three grounders over the next three at-bats, scoring only one of those runners to take a 1-0 lead after one.
They would not score the rest of the way.
With one out in the top of the second, Lazzaro drew a walk before Markey singled to the gap in right center, giving the Red Storm (3-2) runners on first and third. Next up to the plate was Wetterau, who fouled off four pitches before going down looking. On that last pitch of the at-bat, however, Markey successfully stole second, drawing the throw and allowing Lazzaro to easily score from third.
After a few scoreless frames, most of which were of the 1-2-3 variety, the Red Storm resumed the scoring in the top of the sixth. Folz kicked things off with a one-out single before Henshaw doubled him home in the following at-bat. Two batters later, McGeehan delivered another run-scoring two-bagger, pushing the St. John's advantage to a pair, 3-1, after five and a half.
After Rodriguez exited with no outs and a runner on first in the seventh, Mosseau entered and surrendered a bloop single and a walk to load the bases. The 6-foot-6 southpaw kept the ball in the infield for the rest of the frame, keeping Cal off the board and preserving a two-run St. John's lead.
The Johnnies rallied with two outs but left runners on the corners in the top of the ninth. Cal then staged its own rally in the home half, putting runners on second and third. With two outs, Darren Baker smoked a ball to third base that looked like it would tie the contest, but Folz climbed the ladder and came down with it, end the game and securing the St. John's victory.
The Red Storm will look to complete the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at Evans Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
