QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2020) – After splitting its two matches last weekend against NJIT and Brown, the St. John's women's tennis team returns to the court with three contests against Columbia, Coastal Carolina, and College of Charleston.
On Friday at 11:30 a.m., St. John's (6-4) will battle No. 21 Columbia for the fifth time in the series' history at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
Coastal Carolina (2-3) welcomes the Red Storm at the Stevens Tennis Complex at noon on Sunday for only the second time in the history of the series. In the first appearance between the two programs, the Chanticleers bounced the Johnnies in Conway, S.C., 5-2, on Feb. 22, 2018.
Following St. John's road trip to South Carolina, the Johnnies will travel to Charleston, S.C., to square off with College of Charleston (5-5) on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The two programs have only met once in a match that St. John's secured a narrow 4-3 triumph on Feb. 20, 2018.
Columbia enters its matchup against the Johnnies with a 9-2 overall record, including a perfect 7-0 record in February matches. The Lions are coming off a superb weekend which saw them defeat Fairfield (7-0), No. 25 Syracuse (4-2), and No. 34 Washington State (4-3). Head Coach Lauren Leo's squad has lost its last two meetings with the Lions and is in search of its first win over the local foe since the 2010 season.
Coastal Carolina has won two of its last three contests, sweeping Charleston Southern and UNC Greensboro at home, 7-0. The Chanticleers are 16-8 in singles play, four of those wins earned by Iryna Vardanian from the No. 1 and 2 slots.
College of Charleston has lost its last two bouts heading into the weekend, falling 4-2 to Davidson and 4-3 at the hands of Appalachian State. Eva Nyikos and Halli Trinkle have each won three singles contests this season.
In the Red Storm's last win against NJIT last Friday, Coach Leo's squad clinched the first point of the afternoon with two doubles wins on the No. 1 and 2 courts. Oceane Garibal and Najah Dawson knocked off NJIT's Advaita Saravanan and Adara Omar in the No. 2 slot, 6-3. St. John's claimed the second doubles triumph on the No. 1 court as Jessica Livianu and Gabriela Tenorio outdueled Joleta Budiman and Amira Badawi, 7-6.
Livianu, the No. 51 player in the Oracle/ITA Rankings, saw herself trailing in a singles match for the first time this season after dropping the first set, 3-6. Despite losing the first set, the three-time BIG EAST Player of the Year brought the Red Storm within one win of clinching the match, toppling Joleta Budiman in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Garibal and Tenorio claimed the other two singles contests in the No. 2 and 5 tilts to seal the 4-2 victory over the Highlanders.
Following St. John's road trip to South Carolina, the Johnnies will travel to Greenville, R.I., to square off with Bryant on Saturday, March 7, at 7:15 p.m.
