Johnnies manage just four hits in game one against the 49ers
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Feb. 28, 2020) – The St. John's baseball team could not claw back from an early deficit on Friday afternoon, dropping its series opener to Charlotte, 5-1, at Hayes Stadium.
Accounting for half of the team's hit total, Ryan Markey went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Ryan Hogan brought in the Johnnies' lone run of the afternoon with an RBI infield single in the fifth.
Sean McGeehan doubled for the fourth straight contest and the fifth time in his last six games. The senior outfielder now has as many two-baggers in seven outings to start the season as he did during all 50 games of his junior campaign.
Starter Nick Mondak was tagged with the loss after surrendering four earned runs in five innings of work. Freshman Sonny Fauci tossed three frames of shutout relief, striking out three while scattering a hit and a walk.
After stranding runners on the corners in the bottom of the first, Charlotte brought home three in the second. The first three 49ers of the inning reached base to load the bags before an RBI groundout to second plated the afternoon's first run. Another 49er came home on a wild pitch before a Carson Johnson single brought in the final run of the frame.
Mondak faced three batters in a scoreless third before Charlotte added two more runs, only one of which was earned, in the fourth to bump its lead to 5-0. Mondak retired the first two batters of the frame before a walk, two singles and a fielding error allowed the 49ers to pad their advantage.
St. John's got on the board in the top of the fifth, as Markey laced a leadoff double before advancing to third on a balk and scoring on an RBI infield single off the bat of Hogan.
Trailing 5-1 after six, the Red Storm threatened but failed to score in the top of the seventh. Markey singled and Peter Abinanti walked to lead off the frame before Charlotte retired three straight Johnnies to maintain its four-run advantage at the stretch.
St. John's went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the Charlotte lead.
The Red Storm and the 49ers will return to action Saturday afternoon at Hayes Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
