The Red Storm is to face Syracuse, Siena, and Wagner starting Friday afternoon
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2020) – After capturing its lone win of the week over Morgan State on Saturday, the St. John's women's tennis team returns to the court this weekend with three contests against New York foes Syracuse, Siena, and Wagner.
On Friday at 2 p.m. ET, Head Coach Lauren Leo's squad will square off with former BIG EAST rival Syracuse on the road before returning to the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., to host Siena and Wagner in a tri-match on Sunday at 3:30 and 8:30 p.m., respectively.
After falling to Yale in the spring opener, 6-1, St. John's has rattled off two consecutive wins over Fairfield and Morgan State at the USTA National Tennis Center.
In the Red Storm's rout over Morgan State, Kajsa Stegrell and Camila Ordonez opened the doubles round with a 6-0 sweep over Ana-Lei Kalawe and Stefania Moyisadi in the No. 3 match. Jessica Livianu and Milka Genkova clinched the first point of the night for the Johnnies as they bounced Asmara Rose and Averiana Mitchell on the No. 1 court, 6-1. Najah Dawson and Oceane Garibal secured the third doubles victory for the Red Storm, defeating Dana Santiago and Jourdan Wallace in the No. 2 slot, 6-2.
Livianu took care of her No. 1 singles bout against Morgan State's Asmara Rose, 6-1, 6-o, to give St. John's a 2-0 lead. Garibal and Dawson followed with straight-set victories in the No. 3 and 4 contests, respectively, blanking Stefania Moyisadi (6-0, 6-0) and Ana-Lei Kalawe (6-0, 6-0).
Willa Bay Breunich picked up her first singles win of the season as the Port St. Lucie, Fla., native swept Guntra Upeniece in the No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-0. Ordonez secured the Red Storm's sixth and final point of the evening with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 triumph in the No. 5 slot over Anabel Torrente.
Over the first three matches of the year, the Johnnies have amassed victories in 11 of their 18 singles bouts. Livianu has started her senior campaign with three triumphs in a row and has yet to relinquish a set. Dawson, Garibal, and Ordonez each improved to 2-1 on the year after sealing victories in their singles contests against Morgan State.
The Red Storm has not fared well with Syracuse in recent history, falling in each of the last seven matchups. St. John's last win over the Orange came on April 19, 2008, when the Johnnies knocked Syracuse out of the BIG EAST Championships with a 4-2 triumph. This season, Syracuse is off to a perfect start, winning each of its four matches in commanding fashion. Syracuse bounced Boston University in its last match, 6-1, behind five straight-set singles victories.
Siena has won four of its first five tilts to start the spring 2020 campaign. The Saints wiped Bucknell off the court in their last contest, sweeping the Bison in Lewisburg, Pa., 7-0. Siena is 19-9 in singles play this season, with Anastasia Koniaev and Nanea Perkins leading the charge with four wins apiece. Megan Brown has accumulated a 3-2 record in the No. 1 singles slot for the Saints.
The Red Storm meets a familiar foe in Wagner to cap off the three-match weekend. The Johnnies battled the Seahawks in a tight contest last season, narrowly defeating the NEC foe, 4-3, at the USTA National Tennis Center. Wagner has started its season with a 3-0 record, one of which came against a conference rival in St. Francis-Brooklyn. The Seahawks trounced the Terriers 6-1 behind stellar performances from Samantha Lugtu, Alegra D'Alessandro, and Diana Pinzariu. The trio has combined to win eight of their nine total bouts to begin the season. Vendika Anand is 2-1 in 2020 on the No. 1 singles court.
Following St. John's three matches against New York opponents this weekend, the Red Storm will host Villanova in its first BIG EAST contest of the season on Friday, Feb. 14 at the USTA National Tennis Center. The Johnnies wrap up their weekend on Sunday, Feb. 16, to square off with UMass in Amherst, Mass.
