St. John’s Falls to Syracuse in Tight Contest, 4-3

Jessica Livianu sealed her fourth-consecutive singles match in straight sets on Friday
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2020) – After sealing two 6-1 home victories at the USTA National Tennis Center against Fairfield and Morgan State, the St. John's women's tennis team fell in its second-straight road bout in a tight 4-3 contest against former BIG EAST rival Syracuse.
Jessica Livianu and Milka Genkova opened the doubles round with a 6-1 triumph over Syracuse's Zeynep Erman and Kim Hansen in the No. 1 match. Kajsa Stegrell and Gabriela Tenorio clinched the first point of the night for the Johnnies as they bounced Sofya Treshcheva and Polina Kozyreva on the No. 3 court, 4-3.
Livianu took care of her No. 1 singles bout against Syracuse's Guzal Yusupova, 6-1, 6-1, to give St. John's a 3-0 lead.
The Johnnies faltered down the stretch as Syracuse would secure the next four matches and clinch a 4-3 win at home. The Orange would capture three of their four singles victories in straight sets in the No. 3-5 slots as St. John's Genkova, Najah Dawson, and Tenorio lost to Miranda Ramirez, Kim Hansen, and Zeynep Erman, respectively.
The Johnnies had one last chance to steal a 4-3 victory from Syracuse on the road with Oceane Garibal and Sofya Treshcheva dueling on the No. 3 court. After dropping the first set 2-6, The Saint Tropez, France, native would level the match at one set apiece with a 6-2 advantage in the second set. Treshcheva clinched the win for Syracuse in the third set, knocking off Garibal, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
The Red Storm's Willa Bay Breunich was awarded the win in the No. 6 match via forfeit.
The Johnnies return to Queens to host state foes, Siena and Wagner, for a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Queens College Tennis Center. St. John's will battle Siena at 3:30 p.m. ET, followed by Wagner at 8:30 p.m. ET.
