The Red Storm will look to defeat Rutgers for the first time since 2013 on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2020) – The St. John's lacrosse team opens up its 2020 campaign with a road matchup against former BIG EAST foe, Rutgers. The 28th all-time meeting between the two programs is set to start at 3 p.m. ET at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, N.J.
The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network Plus with Lou Brogno and Rick Mercurio on the call. Updates will be provided throughout the game on Twitter by following the handle @StJohnsLax.
Head Coach Jason Miller enters his 14th season at the helm of the Johnnies and leads a team that features an influx of fresh talent to complement seven returning starters and 29 returning letter winners. The Red Storm finished 2019 ranked in the top half of the BIG EAST conference several statistical categories including man-up goals (first), saves per game (third), ground balls per game (third), and shots on goal per game (third).
The Red Storm's first nine games this spring will all be nonconference contests while the team's BIG EAST Conference slate will span the final five games of the regular season. This season marks only the third time in school history that St. John's will open conference play after the completion of its nonconference slate. The Johnnies' 2020 campaign includes six home games and eight road contests.
St. John's has faced the Scarlet Knights more than any other opponent in school history, as the two squads have met 27 times dating back to 1984. Rutgers holds a 22-5 advantage all-time in the series, including a 19-15 victory in last year's season opener at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Under Miller, the Red Storm is 6-7 in season-openers. The Johnnies are 17-14 all-time in the first game of a campaign, including an 8-7 mark since the program's reinstatement in 2005.
The Scarlet Knights enter Saturday's showdown with a 1-0 mark. Rutgers opened the season last Saturday with a 20-9 win over Quinnipiac in Piscataway. Ethan Rall earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors while Kieran Mullins was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Team of the Week.
Rutgers was selected to finish fifth in the Big Ten by the league's coaches during the preseason. Entering the year, the Scarlet Knights received votes but just missed cracking the Top 20 in both the Inside Lacrosse and USILA Coaches Poll.
Last season, Rutgers finished with a 7-8 record and a 2-3 mark in conference play. Head coach Brian Brecht is in his ninth year behind the bench for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers returns its top six scorers from a year ago, including its entire starting attack unit. Junior Adam Charalambides (47 goals, 14 assists), senior Kieran Mullins (23 goals, 37 assists) and junior Ryan Gallagher (24 goals, 20 assists) combined for 165 points last season, with Charalambides' 47 goals good for third all-time in Scarlet Knights history.
As has been the norm during the Miller era, the St. John's lacrosse team has to navigate one of the toughest schedules in NCAA Division I and in program history this year.
Two of the top 20 schools in the Inside Lacrosse preseason poll are on the Red Storm's 2020 schedule: No. 9 Denver and No. 16 Georgetown. Villanova is receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse poll and is ranked No. 18 in the USILA Coaches Poll. Three other opponents on St. John's 2020 schedule are receiving votes in the preseason polls, including Rutgers, Michigan, and Hofstra.
Returning for the Red Storm this season St. John's senior Mike Madsen was named to the 2020 BIG EAST Preseason Team, as announced by the conference on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The Locust Valley, N.Y., native is now the second St. John's midfielder to be named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team in program history.
Madsen is coming off a stellar junior season where he led the Johnnies with 22 assists and 47 points. The Locust Valley, N.Y. native scored a career-high 25 goals and recorded five games with three or more tallies, earning him a place on last year's BIG EAST Second Team.
Mike's brother Joe Madsen returns as St. John's top goal scorer from a season ago, netting 33 goals (4th in BIG EAST) and dishing seven assists in 14 games played. Alongside his twin brother, the Locust Valley, N.Y., native was a Second-Team All-BIG EAST selection and a two-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recipient in 2019. The attackman scored in all 14 games for the Johnnies, including a five-goal outburst in a losing effort in the season finale at Georgetown.
Brody Agres, a freshman from Farmingdale, N.Y., featured as the Red Storm's netminder for 817 minutes of action last year. Agres set a program record last year for most saves by a freshman goalie in a season as he blocked 166 shot attempts in his first collegiate campaign. The Farmingdale, N.Y., native's 166 saves were fourth-best in the BIG EAST last season.
On defense, the Johnnies return Pat Smyth and Tim Kiel. The pair of seniors add experience to the young roster, logging in a combined 83 games played.
The Red Storm will have a quick turnaround as they will have 48 hours to prepare for a road contest with local rival Stony Brook on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
